I'm sure like me you've probably wondered what the mysterious voice in the instrumental sections of The Chauffeur is actually saying! Over the years there have been many ideas, but I believe I've finally deciphered it! There's a an interesting article I've contributed to at Sesquiotica, here's the link. sesquiotic.com/2009/02/21/nothing-to-chauffeur-a-classiomatic/?unapproved=182937&moderation-hash=9ce810a6d012df6ce1c49716afbd3cdd#comment-182937My comment is currently waiting moderation, but is as follows. "This truly is the holy grail for all Duranies! I’m also using some audio software which is helping to decipher this mysterious voice a little. At 3:37 what you hear as,”Albert Schweitzer”, I believe is, “moves and flies”. The sounds that follow it are either insects, birds or both. The next part is the clearest of the 4 and I would agree it’s, “there’s more to this kind of camouflage…more than just colour and shape”. Again I agree that it sounds like, “who’s going out, in the twilight schematic”. Then what you hear as,”listen”, I’m, hearing as “it’s probably dying’! Strange I know, but if it’s a nature / wildlife record then it kind of makes sense. Now just to find the actual source!" Please let me know your thoughts on what might be being said!

I believe the insect sounds are Nick using the JP8.
A total secret, he's said he'll never reveal how he gets birds/chirping insects from the synth!

Simon said the source was a recording from a BBC nature show (that was also put out as a record? I think that's right...not 100% sure)

Great work! I tried to pitch-alter the sound, and slow it down a bit: s000.tinyupload.com/index.php?file_id=11258758885443641430I was hoping it would sound like David Attenborough, either BBC Wildlife on One, or Life on Earth. The nearest I found was a documentary called "Invasion of the Land" from 1979, but to me it doesnt sound like David Attenborough. If that is the case, its unlikely we will find the source. This is as close as I can get: "and moves up front... What his kind of camouflage, more than just colour and shape. A newly forming (calling?) world, hither to a (carskiomatic vissel?).". "Stop Rocking Me?"

Life on Earth (1979) Invasion of the Land is on BBC iPlayer at the moment, if it is David Attenborough talking on The Chauffeur, then maybe he's voice is at a different pitch, and sounds like a phaser or flanger added to it.
What I can now hear is: beasts never fight.....there is more to this kind of camouflage, more different colour and shapes.....who's calling now, never to walk past here again.

I dont think it is that documentary as I had a look through it, although I cant say I watched it all the way through.
It must have been British (BBC1, BBC2 or ITV), taken from a 1979 to mid 1980 show, because SLB didnt bring the song to the band before that date, and by 1980 is was being recorded for the album.
If its not Richard Attenborough then this narrows it down to the ITV show, Survival. This had many narrators, and had been going a lot longer. Intriguingly, one of their shows was called 'Tiger, Tiger' (1977). Also Mysterious Castles of Clay (1978), Two in the Bush (1980).
Can someone watch Tiger, Tiger to make sure:
The voice in the song sounds like John Hedges:

I could have sworn I read somewhere that it was a record that they got the voice from...
...I could also be completely mistaken!

I could have sworn I read somewhere that it was a record that they got the voice from... ...I could also be completely mistaken! It was from a record, a BBC nature record. I don't know how it's become conflated in people's minds as having come from a TV show. "WHAT ARE THE SPOKEN WORDS AT THE END OF THE SONG “THE CHAUFFEUR”? The monologue is from a nature record that the band found. The man is talking about “insects in the grass.” www.duranduran.com/wordpress/ask-katy-faq/ps The insects are real and came from the record as well, not from Nick's synths...the whole point of the record was the narrator talking about different insects and then playing the sounds they make.
