Ok, I'll bite.
The album is not as good as Notorious, but is better than Liberty. I felt let down when it was released, and just like Medz it has taken me many years to actually like most of the album.
1. Big Thing - A song about wanting to be a big hit again on the "Power rotation" of radio stations, but banging their heads against a brick wall (Notorious got very lukewarm interest in the States). - I think the song is a grower on me, and I find. I used to prefer the (Marshall Jefferson?) remix (7" and 12") but although those are fun, somehow the rawness of the album version brings me back. 7/10
2. ISWYL - An odd dancefloor filler, with a disjointed almost hip-hop beat. A classic for me, especially with that guest guitar solo. I dont like the stage version, which is just "I like noise" and then just stops. 8.5/10.
3. ASWI - Has a soft flow like much of TWA album, but with that late 80s house feel. Another classic for me, 8.5/10.
4. Too Late Marlene - For me this used to be the standout track of the whole album, but opposite to big thing, I dont play it much today. As a ballad it feels half way between the Latino Wine-bar feel of Notorious, and the more Street sound of Liberty, but falls between the cracks. At the time I would give it 9 but now I think 6.5/10.
5. Drug - A song about their several years of cocaine habit. I think this was an important song for them to write, as it was a driving factor in their careers. It also has a bitter/sweet edge to it, like the band are starting to get fed up with taking this stuff. I prefer the Daniel Abraham Remix to the original (rather boring) version, and I love the song live! Its also rumoured that there is a Marshall Jefferson Remix of Drug! - Original mix 5/10, Abraham Remix 7/10.
6. DYBIS - Never liked the song but some think its a classic. It just feels like a song in pain to me. I cant rate this higher than 4/10, as it gives a mixed set of messages but without a great hook.
7. Palomino - Not sure where this song was meant to be going, but to me it feels like swimming underwater, perhaps drowning. A mysterious song in parts, it reminds me of the experimental side of the first album. Not sure where this belongs. Its a lovely song but I can only give 6/10.
9. Land - Feels like being rescued and returning to dry land. Perhaps this is a throwback to the Drum incident? Very heart-warming and sometimes emotional, but not a strong single. It feels like the end of the album for me. 7/10.
11. EOA is more like a story than a song, and the tale has mixed message "Hey boy, give your dreams a rest" instead of "Hey boy, give your dreams the test". Its almost a giving up song. Not sure what they were trying to dramatise with this lullaby, but I cant fault them for trying to say something about the street side of the American Dream. But its not Careless Memories, so it gets 4/10.
12. LSD - I thought this was a great jam, and I'm glad they released it. I wouldnt expect the band to go beyond 10 songs in those days, and this feels like a polished raw demo they put on the end to rock the audience out a bit. Its not a classic, but it was one of my favourite songs when I bought the album - especially played loud to annoy my parents. Today its just fluff, but still 6.5/10.
Perhaps its one of those albums which keeps on giving, and its possible to find hidden corners of it, while TWA and Notorious where relatively straight forward. I'd say it can be a great play on rainy day, but its not a great album compared to 7 others which are better. Overall I felt like it was a jumble of ideas and styles and would have been better as a pure house album. 6/10.
