When 'Big Thing' came out in Fall 1988, I was a Senior in High School and I at the time had moved on to The Cure, Depeche Mode, New Order, even industrial bands like 242, Ministry... DD were 'done' as far as I was concerned, 'Notorious' was 2 years back (which is an eternity between age 15 to 17) and that album was too 'adult' for me at the time.
However, I was really surprised by Big Thing and ended up loving it so much I went to see them at RCM in NY on 3/10/1989 - my first even DD show. I thought it was edgy, alternative, and they finally got a little 'dangerous' with their looks (Si's long hair). It was a solid break from the 'Notorious' world. Stand out cuts to me; Big Thing, IDWYL, All She Wants Is, Shame, Palomino, Land...
It's a crime that 'Land' has never been played live, that song is amazing and the guitar solo is stunning.
Overall it was 'Big Thing' that brought me back to DD. Unfortunately 2 years later 'Liberty' lost me again lol... However, while it brought me back, none of my friends at the time were into it. They were done.

Big Thing the album does a really good job of blending what Simon, John, and Nick want to do and then you have Warren adding his atmospheric guitar into the album. Favorites for me are All She Wants Is, I Don't Want Your Love, Too Late Marlene, Do You Believe in Shame, Palomino, and Land. I never really moved on from Duran to other artists. They have always been my favorite. I listen and enjoy other bands from the same era but Duran Duran has always stood out to me.

They were actually in front of the Chicago house style that many mainstream pop producers chased for the next two years. They were very much ahead of the House style which was just starting out in 1988. By the time Britpop House was in every Euro pop song in 1992, the band had already left it behind years ago. Same with Medazzaland - the dark, grungy tone would become normal 10 years later, but by then the band had already had a reunion and gone back to Pop.

Hilarious :-) Please see my post in the "Erotic Fan Fiction" DD Board for details ;-) The flip side of BT was my soundtrack to more than one romantic evening… Did you try to 'time everything' with the abrupt LSD cutoff?
