I think the tape was of his keyboard main part. The Intro loop was on one of his synths, as you see him turn it down. Sounds like the backing beat is played on bongos?, but the cricket sounds are from the tape as well.

The backing tracks remain to this date but are now all digital. The tape recorder prominently on stage was a new wave/new romantics thing as well. Soft Cell did that as did Depeche Mode.

I remember Depeche Mode blatantly using one on TOTPs in the early 80s. It was sat right in the middle of the stage.
