To those who thought I may have been a teensy bit negative this week, I thought I would offer a Top 10 of underrated non-single DD songs. It's pretty straightforward really: -
1. Friends of Mine: classic driving rock as punk becomes new romantic under Thatcher's watchful glare: "The money's gone, I've known it all along. Why don't you say I'm wrong? Why don't they drop the bomb?"
2. Before the Rain: "And so we travel and we unravel towards the place where all loose ends go"
3. Want you More: "Musta seen me coming down a mile above the ground" Exhilarating and upbeat
4. Too Bad You're so Beautiful: "I'm a hostage to that face of yours" "My lunar dreams, how do I stop them?" Roller-coastering into love
5. The Edge of America: "Below the towers of the citadel, seems someone overlooked the cost. Forgotten soldier of paradise, now Paradise is lost." Paradise is indeed lost
6. Big Bang Generation: "Staring through a hole in the ozone there's nobody home to play back your answerphone" The depressing 'now'
7. Last Chance on the Stairway: "It could be the atmosphere sinking, Ooh, I don't know what you're thinking, I don't even know what you're drinking, But it keeps this heaven alive" Dizzy days of early romance - nothing else ever felt like it!
8. Shadows on your Side: "Scandal in white on a tangled vine with everybody to say that your having the time of your life when your life is on the slide" I know the feeling, sort of.
9. The Valley: "Always stretching time but it's never long enough" "Maybe we're just comfortably dizzy?" Time is indeed never long enough and I have been caught in the valley, esp. under COVID-19 lockdowns
10. Chains: "Dark shapes gather round: Voices like my brother's are whispering to me" Death is beside you, and you can no longer feel your own burning flesh. A cheerful take on getting old.
