Another song with single potential buried as a Japanese bonus track. I am in the minority here but I thought Nate Hills did an excellent job production wise. The Timbaland stuff always struck me as pre-fabricated and could have gone to any client, even if Nite Runner is a banger. Had I run Sony at the time, Nite Runner would have been a lead single (great exposure with JT and Tim), Cry Baby Cry and Tempted. Are they classics? No, but they are bangers that would have opened up a whole new audience for DD. Completely agree, Nite Runner being the Timbaland club track and Cry Baby Cry being the song with a typical Duran-hook and sick bassline. Falling Down is a song I always skip, don't like the arrangements. Timberlake (is he even on the track) and Duran don't gel well I guess (neither on a personal level I believe).

I agree. RCM album sounds insanely underproduced and mostly just terrible. When I listen to the "The Valley", I immediately think "ooh, they didn't know what to do with the chorus and in which direction to go with the melody"... "Cry Baby Cry", on the other hand, is a great song and should have been released as a single.

Music By – Duran Duran, Nate Hills I think Nate did a LOT of heavy lifting behind the scenes and should be given credit where credit is due. The band recruited him to build off the Timbaland sessions and what he delivered was better than his mentor’s tracks with the band. The label probably forced some stringent deadlines after Reportage was scrapped too. Given what a disaster 2006-2007 was for them, Nate should be recognized for his efforts, even if the final product is not to everyone’s liking. Cry Baby Cry, The Valley, She’s Too Much, Box full O Honey and Tempted are fire.

I guess I'm in the minority as I think 'Cry Baby Cry' is not much more than decent B-side material, same in quality of writing and execution (production) as some of the Paper Gods and AYNIN extras on their respective deluxe versions.
I love RCM as is; it is still my favourite of the reunion albums by far. On the evidence of Medazzaland (another favourite of mine) I'd say they've always been good at 'salvage jobs' and those have always done good for their music. I don't think 'CBC' adds anything to RCM, rather it detracts from the cohesiveness of the finished album when put into the tracklist as on the vinyl version.

I tend to agree with your last sentence - I’ve always thought it was an odd inclusion. I perceive it as a single consolation to those fans who the band knew wouldn't appreciate such a diverse album. Thank God they did. But you’re right again when you say CBC is ‘B side’ material - but I got to say it was a relief when it did drop / got released.

CBC is a decent B-side. The rest of RCM though does not even meet that criterion (well, maybe Falling Down, that would have been a nice B-side). CBC is RCM’s I believe/All I need to know

CBC is RCM’s I believe/All I need to know Haha, that's a great quote! The difference is, of course, that Big Thing had incredible tracks like I Don't Want Your Love, All She Wants Is, Too Late Marlene, Do You Believe In Shame, Palomino, Land, and The Edge Of America. I absolutely love I Believe / All I Need To Know, and actually think it is one of Duran's greatest ever songs. But I can maybe sort of tolerate it not being on the album, as at least MOST of Big Thing is pretty damn good anyway. It just would have been even better with IB/AINTK on it But RCM doesn't contain anywhere near the number of quality tracks that Big Thing does. So for that reason it was a bad idea to leave CBC off RCM, because leaving a great track off an underwhelming record stands out like ... Attachment Deleted

I also see that production wise CBC is the odd one out for RCM, but I indeed hinted at DD being m a s t e rs in not including excellent tracks on albums. Another example is Beautiful Colours on Astronaut…

View Attachment Omitting CBC from the ‘official’ album was totally the right thing to. It would be like including ‘Breath after Breath’ on The Wedding Album. Oh, wait...
