Check this article out: www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/music/story/2021-07-28/mtv-40th-anniversary-billy-idol-go-gos-huey-lewis-reo-speedwagonQuick observations: 1) Michael Jackson & Madonna are credited with helping MTV break out and be successful: 2) DD gets a passing reference in the beginning; 3) Wonder why they interviewed Huey Lewis & not DD?!? DD has sold 150 million records!!! Admittedly, only about 13M in the US, but stillā¦! Oh wait - because Sports and Fore! were both bigger than any DD album in the USA!!! šš¤£šš¤£šš¤£ā¦and DD never had an American hit bigger than āThe Power of Loveā šš¤£šš¤£ Over to you, andre005 !!! Sorry, couldnāt resistā¦ Hey itās a big world. They are very popular in Barbados and Antigua. Violence of summer is probably number 3 right now. Someone will be along shortly with an update.

Huey Lewis has that weird cult following because of American Psycho.
Really, I'm not surprised MJ and Madonna got favorable mention given the times we're in. They deserve recognition for sure. But the first videos I remember seeing on mtv were definitely not mj or madonna.
Also, I've been aware for some time of the collective omission of Duran Duran from all sorts of 80s compilations and 80s music history type documentaries. It actually makes me wonder if they pissed someone off back in the day and that was revenge.

My personal opinion is that the 100 million includes all forms of worldwide āunitsā- 7ā/12ā singles, albums in all formats, Internet song purchases/streams, videos (they sold a ton of those in the 80ās)
Itās also possible for an album like Rio which sold/certified for 2 million US units may actually be 2.9 million etc.
I would bet that the other (non certified) singles in the 80ās (and Come Undone) probably sold in the range of 300k-450k each, just in the US.
I suppose itās also possible they are including Power Station and Arcadia stuff for bloat too lol

Nobody thought that movie would amount to much! Critics were wrong ā¦he even had a cameo in the movie ā¦

I would note that videos are included in that RIAA figure - at least the Greatest DVD, and Live from London (which I believe holds the distinction as DDās most recent release to be certified?) I am less confident in streamingā¦what is it, 1000 = 1 album sale? But I suppose it can only help the number. One of these days, I might try to spreadsheet it out (just for the US) and see what I come up with. Obviously, I would need to find the timeā¦would need to let the wife and kids knowā¦step away from the Andy vs. Warren threads, Roger vs. Joe Travers, Wes > JT, etc etcā¦ Anywayā¦I know I am a broken record on this topic, but we all have our vices on these forumsā¦!

I canāt speak for other countries, but in the US, Huey Lewis was huge circa 1984-87. All over the radio, MTVā¦at least as big as DD, likely bigger (in the US). Sports and Fore! sold 10M combined- far more than DD in that era. Itās definitely not just because of American Psycho.
