I'm so glad Roger came back in 2001 but I have to say his drumming has been lazily played throughout the 2003-2019 tours. He never hits the infamous Wild Boys drum roll like the studio version. His foot pedal beats are rarely played like the studio versions. He just plays basic 4/4 beats on almost every song. It's kind of hard to explain in words but maybe the musician's out there can understand me. He has never been able to emulate Steve Ferrone's drums on Notorious, Skin Trade and I Don't Want Your Love. I've played drums since 1973 and I'm 53, healthy and I can still mimic Roger and Steve's drums beat for beat. Roger looks to be in much better physical shape than me so I don't get it.

They’re all professional pop stars but none of them are professional musicians. JT has grown the most in terms of musicianship by practicing a lot over the years. The rest have to rely on studio technology and precorded stuff for their live performances.
The recent performances of Power Station’s Some like it hot by DD are particularly embareasing in terms of live drumming. But hey, even Tony Thompson was not able to recreate that live (watch the SNL live performance, all he does is play the hi hat).

They know how to craft songs (well, most of the time) but their skills as musicians are limited. I would say Arnie’s skills as an actor are also very limited btw. That does not mean one cannot become very popular of course. Madonna is also not a skilled singer, while many on programs on The Voice and such are. Yet they will never make it.

I do wonder if they have ever tried to improve their playing by receiving some form of training or classes? Like athletes have coaches, musicians may have teachers. Simon had vocal coaching for the problems he encountered in 2010 and it’s done him some good. Nick I doubt has received any kind of formal training and I suspect that JT only had what Bernard Edwards coached him back in 1984. Roger, no idea. His style has changed a bit and it’s more relaxed. But like I mentioned in another thread, I think he is kept on a bit of a leash. I’ve seen clips of him behind the scenes playing in a more jazzy style and it’s pretty good.

But I think Simon has too in that he's gain more control over his vocals. He's always had a unique voice, but it's definitely improved over the years. Having said that, the heavy use of technology has, I think, been a huge hindrance to the bands musicianship. I know nothing about production, but I know a bit about those synths Nick uses on tour, and those are a pain in the arse to program. Roland loves to handicap their synth hardware so you need a bunch of it to really go where you want (and that's why eurorack is becoming so very popular) and you need to have a degree to use it (jk but only a little. It's a hassle). And I think Roger has become used to not being the one who carries the rhythm, as I recall he enjoys playing drums with other music (suggesting that he's following an already established beat) so he simply doesn't try as hard. Not meant to be a judgment, but with backing tracks there is less necessity.

God damn! Nick is not a pianist, he’s a synthesist. A shaper of sound!

In my humble opinion, every drummer has their own style. Comparing Roger Taylor with others is not fair, I think. I never heard Steve Ferrone or Sterling Campbell playing live like Roger Taylor played in the 3 first albums of the band! So, let's face the main thing here, I'm a drummer too and I accept how Roger choose the patterns on the new songs. Of course, we heard lots of complaining about the lack of the John's bass. Dom is not a full member of the band but he knows how to plays the essential in the stage. Duranman, as you said, you are a drummer too and you can play note by note every DD song? I would like to see those skills... youtube? I can share my latest drum cover I recorded of the "Give It All Up" Thanks in advance! Astronaut2005

Professional as in trained or skilled, you know what I mean by this. Actually, not... Compared to Tom Jones, then all male pop/rock singers wouldn't be professionals. IMO, professional is someone who does a job that people usually do as a hobby. That's all.
