This is it. Geldof actually knew Bowie quite well from back in the late 70s and the opening lines were written with the intention of Bowie singing them, but he couldn’t commit due to being a tax exile and not able to come in the country at the time. Few singers could sing the deep first part and back then Paul Young had a pretty extensive range. It fell to him. For the record this new Band Aid idea is shocking. I can’t imagine anyone actually wants this. It would have been far better to put out alternative takes with some of the singers attempting other lines. There’s a whole section that was dropped from the original that was a bridge and in the band aid documentary the BBC made, you can hear Simon and Sting sing on it. It’s never fully confirmed but Simon and Sting recorded their vocal a few days before the famous Sunday and between them they recorded most of the lines before all the other stars added their bits. Wasn't the band in Germany on tour during this time? They literally came back and had 0 sleep? How did Simon have time to record the whole song? This interview came out last year and Midge's engineer had kept a diary. Simon, John & Sting all recorded bits on the Friday (the day before Germany). Check the video around 3 minutes to confirm this. They weren't touring Germany, it was a one-off TV appearance. In addition if you get to 34 minutes into this documentary you hear Simon singing a different melody as well as different words in a part that never came out. The whole documentary is worth watching (despite the wobbly picture) where Sting confirms he sang the whole song and Paul Young confirms Bowie was meant to open the song. There's obviously a lot more of the song with Simon on vocals. Finally here is the German TV show they appeared at on the Saturday, the night before the official session for Band Aid. If you watch the official video of Band Aid you see how Simon is leading the way in many ways. This is because he already knew the song and was familiar with the parts and melody.

And how much bass did John actually play? Or was it all done on keyboards and synth? I heard he did and than other places not much as he was just miming the bass for the video. Did he have any input musically on this song?

Did he have any input musically on this song? He apparently put his bass part down on the Friday, the same day as Simon however its hard to hear any live bass on the final version. He's probably turned down in the mix as there's definitely a synth bass on the single. Paul Weller also recorded a guitar part in advance of the Sunday recording session but it never made it onto the record. As the first video I posted above explains, its a bit of a myth that it was all done in one day. The backing track had been recorded over a 5 day period and numerous vocals were laid down before the Sunday. On the actual day the only live non vocal recording was Phil Collins drums. In the video where you see John playing bass, he is obviously miming. His part had already been done.

I Love the Extended version! Especially the stars who could NOT Make it!
Especially those all wishing everyone a Happy (Merry Christmas!)
I wonder what the single would have been like with Sir Paul and Bowie being a part of it...amazing if we had today's technology back then and those that can't be there could digitally save and send their parts!
at 5:10 and up I hear JT's signature bass--even a slap there!
