I don't think they were that much different than the slime that comment blithely on YouTube videos now. They just got paid to say mean things, and the public ate it up. I thought it was hilarious at the time - at least that NME guy - I mean, he hated EVERYTHING. It really does make me laugh.
Sure, there is a different type of critic who doesn't like the band for real reasons, but... That's different.

Ive said it heaps of times
In Australia and the uk, DD made it instantly and it wasn’t long before America caught on
The NME and Rolling stone etc felt useless because they are supposed to report on the next big thing and feel somewhat useful that they’re helping fuel a band achieve band support and a growing fandom
In DDs case the critics felt useless coz dd had pretty much done it without them and that’s how I see it
Dd didn’t make it after the 3rd lp but way before that
Dd never needed to release EPs, they had Australia’s and the UKs attention with the first LP and fully formed clips, album covers sleeves and singles with artwork to match the LPs etc
Stuff like this was unheard of at the time so early on in a bands career and indeed dd were pioneers of fully form image and presentation to the market

There is one thing that has always puzzled me, they say that art makes people better, but I feel that it is the exact opposite: it turns people into buffoons who think they are better than others. Music critics are a prime example of this.

Music critics are a prime example of this. Agree your right again max, how come you know everything here’s the thing critique the music for the musics sake, if it ticks many boxes like much of dds stuff does so be it, admit it as a critic there’s no need to go into the personalities coz that’s not about the music there’s no need to go into how the artist chooses to present themselves be it the yacht or underground world of the UOTS clip or the waterfall in the reflex where thousands got drenched at that gig 😂 coz that too isn’t about the music just as the band having millions of teenage followers coz that ain’t about the music review but personal insecurities must have made the critics think, how do we help dd make it ? when dd had made it so early on so why not bag them then as non credible, non serious contenders jealousy works in mysterious ways sometimes pretty bad hey

Omg, how I've laughed. Thank you for that, ohioduran. And John's reply is for the ages.
