AYNIN the song is underwhelming, but still okay, especially hate Nick's annoying synth sound in the beginning. They made a remix of the song for people like you, without the offending synth part. You're not alone : It just seemed to be something Nick liked to use. Never bothered me either way. It's a throwback to the tone/pitch bender used on Playing With Uranium. ![]()

I too still think AYNIN is a brilliant album and one of their true best since the first 3. Like duranfan9 pointed out, Runway Runaway, Mediterranea, and Leopard are magnificent and absolute classics. There is something lush and rich and warm about the overall sound that suits the band beautifully.
All that said, I know the band were dragged, practically kicking and screaming by Ronson to write songs that harken back to Rio. I think DD appreciate the album making experience more than the songs themselves, as I think it helped them (in their eyes) to write with a better DD DNA stamp in their songs, while still moving forward and sounding contemporary. They now know how to write a “classic DD song” that sounds current, as opposed to RCM where it sounds current, but doesn’t sound like DD (as the backlash towards the album has shown). But I think ultimately they were happy with the results.
I do definitely think it was a disappointment sales-wise for them. I’m sure they know it was very very well received by their fans, but unfortunately it didn’t seem to translate to better sales. Was it because they didn’t have a major label backing it? PG seemed to do better and I saw at the time that they did a lot more appearances during PG than AYNIN. So that must have something to do with relatively poor sales.
They would definitely play some of those songs again if they had been hits. I don’t think it has much to do with how they feel about the songs themselves. It’s all to do with how well they sold. Plus, they seem to cater their concert setlists to the more casual fan that’s there for the hits, with the occasional one or two deep cuts for the hardcore fans. So as far as playing AYNIN songs live, there’s only so many songs they can fit into an evening. And they have 40 plus years of deep cuts to choose from, so the chances they’re ever going to cycle to something from AYNIN is very slim.
Maybe it’s up to us to keep badgering them about the album, just to show them how much we still love it? I know that if I were to meet them (again—I did once during the Wedding Album time), I would definitely tell them how much I love AYNIN and the albums since then.

They had no major record deal like Warner to push this album!
Imagine if they did! Tape Modern didn't want to spend any major money on promotion..I think it was only distribution..
Band did a terrible job of promoting this album too as they didn't want to spend $$$ on the project...asked fans to submit videos which was fine...but seemed lazy on their part...

For me it's THE best 21st century album. Guitar work is excellent and it really shines the light on Dom's abilities. Bass lines are catchy and funky, drums are solid and feel alive. Song's are interesting, they were not trying too hard to "be current" (as with RCM and Paper Gods), and you can definitely feel the roots of Rio, Duran Duran and Notorious era. But with a slightly more modern touch.
I saw them live at Shepherd's Bush Empire in March 2011 (one of my favourite gigs, because it felt more intimate and "club-like"), and they played quite a few AYNIN tracks (7 I think), and it just proved how great those songs sound live. Proper Duran! Pop-Rock-Funk grooves.
As for the commercial side of things, yeah it could have been more successful, but 2010 and 2011 were years with so much more competition. The Killers were killing it, as were Kings of Leon, etc, and it felt like DD were to trying to compete with them in a way, more than with usual pop acts.
But as for the album... Being Followed, Safe, Girl Panic, Runway Runaway, Leave a Light On... amazing songs. Like I said - Proper Duran!

It seems that the last three full original studio albums established that the band makes solid records, but having an elusive big hit song is difficult. It does just seem on par for the band now being in their 60's though. With Invisible breaking through in an unconventional way... I do propose that NOW it's better to focus on releasing some standalone singles instead of just making another solid full album. All of this may just be moot since they are able to draw big crowds off the old stuff.

All You Need Is Now is a wonderful, wonderful album. It's an album where DD were doing what they do best, it's the sound of a FIVE-piece band without gimmicks.
Leopard is a standout track by DD, that stands shoulder to shoulder with anything they've ever done.

I love AYNIN and have it just outside my top 5 DD albums. There are so many great songs on it, and the songwriting is top-notch. It is a toss-up between this and FP, as the band's best album over the past 25 years. As others have said, it lacked a killer hit single or even a radio-friendly one. The single AYNIN has a great chorus, but a radio-unfriendly synth intro and verse. GP should have been the first single, accompanied by an edited version of the extended video. In fact, I thought the GP video was dreadful as it did nothing to promote the band or song.

Compared to RCM it was a huge step forward - not only artistically, but also commercially. Remember: RCM peaked in the UK Charts at #44 (!!!) while All You Need Is Now was a top 5 in the UK. In the US, RCM peaked at a disappointing #36 (despite Sony backup) whereas AYNIN went top 30 after charting already on Billboard 200 with the digital only release months before the physical release. With their Digital Release, the went #1 in 15 countries when I remember that correctly.
