some artists are giving free downloads to people who come to their shows too, you get a little postcard or whatever. not an "album" per se, but a collection of songs which may or may not be most of what would be a conventional album ... Indeed. Simple Kid hooked us up, and he certainly doesn't have a huge fanbase.

Listening to the Radiohead album now. Since they're going to release it as a real album in the next year and it's at only 160kbps I gave 1 pound. Have to say, it's worth the money. "Nude" is a glorious song!!! I'll buy the record when it's out, so the cheeky f*ckers get more money off me than they normally would've... damn you Thom Yorke!
*Edit* ooooh now "Weird Fishes" is my favourite! That must be what they were trying to some of the songs of Hail To The Thief!
*Another edit* after a few songs that aren't too interesting I got to "Jigsaw Falling Into Place" which is fan-f*cking-tastic! Definitely my favourite song here, plus it'd make my Top 5 Radiohead songs too.

A long time Canadian indie artist Jane Siberry (now known as Issa) has been doing this for the past year on her website. Pay how much you think it's worth. And at a concert I went to last year, she had a CD single and a bucket and you put in how much money you wanted to. Her philosophy is that if you like her music and want her to keep making music, you'll pay well. But you want free music that's fine too.
I think it's a great idea

I should add that the Brian Jonestown Massacre has also been doing this for ages. Their back catalogue and their new album My Bloody Underground can be found on www.brianjonestownmassacre.com. KEEP MUSIC EVIL!

I think this is a fantastic way for out-of-contract artists to piss off record labels! The artists make so little money off record sales anyway (and the record label takes in loads 'o' cash), they really don't have a lot to lose, but everything to gain, by potentially increasing where their money really comes from: touring.
If this experiment is successful for the artist, the labels will come crawling to them, and the artist can tell them to f___ off.
