I'm a big fan of BBC America. I like to have it on in the background on days like today, when I'm swamped by deadline and need something to focus on other than a story I don't particularly want to write.
There's a show called How Clean is Your House?, which I must admit I've never actually watched. I'm really more of a Bargain Hunt/Cash in the Attic/Weakest Link kinda guy.
Apparently on How Clean is Your House?, these two judgmental, unlikeable old women go into homes that are truly fucking filthy. They roll their eyes and look exasperated and, I guess, help people figure out how to not be such fucking slobs.
Here's my question...
Why do these poor fools let television cameras into their hovels? There are piles of moldy shit and yellow newspapers and the sort of stuff usually associated with serial killers or people who own far too many cats in these places. Why invite the world into your revolting, uninhabitable sty? Do people really want to be on television that badly?

I've seen this show a few times. I couldn't believe how messy these houses are. My one friend is trying to get on this show. Her house is extremely messy. Dirt everywhere. Dirty laundry on the floor. In fact, all of her clothes are on the floor. Not sure if she wants a cleaner house or the exposure. Then again this is my one friend who has tried to get on Jerry Springer's show.

i don't know why anyone would want to expose their nastiness like that. Maybe they are so desperate for help that they'll do anything.

Oh Stupe I've seen that show as well. Yuck. I could never live like that. Yuck. Yuck. I would think it would be absolutely awful to live like those I've seen on that show. I freak out if there are crubs on the floor. It's not uncommon for me to sweep my kitchen floor 2-3 times a day when everyone is home at the same time.
I THINK it's other folks (like their mothers or MIL's such as that) who call the show to have those ladies go to those filthy houses. I can't imagine the dwellers of those places taking the intiative to call the show if they can't even take the initiative to actually clean the shit stuck to their stoves. IMO.
Happily my cleaning lady comes today so my house will be EXTRA EXTRA clean! Everyother Wednesday are the happiest days for me! I work hard to keep things neat, tidy & clean ( I have to with 2 boys & my hubby who like to drag the outdoors in & leave stuff everywhere!) between her visits but my lady SCRUBS SCRUBS SCRUBS. She's even been known to vaccum out the garage!! LOVE HER! ;D ;D

Ha! I was actually going to answer the question in the title of this thread because I just spent the past half hour cleaning the vent screens on my oven hood.
When people cook a lot, like we do, those things get f___ing disgusting.
But, to answer the question, I think they are desperate for help. They know it's not normal to live like that and maybe they are ready for an honest, difficult-to-hear evaluation and to put a stop to their habits.
That's my take, and I'm stickin' with it.

They came to the US and did the same show here. It was amazing how some people were/are living. I think it just reaches a point where it is so overwhelming that you don't know where to start to attempt to clean it up. What you don't see is the team of no less than a dozen people unloading the place and scrubbing it down. Most people wouldn't have that sort of help without getting the help like that. Clean House on Style is close to the same. It isn't as bad as far as hygiene is concerned but it is the cream of the crop as far as pack rats and horders are concerned. They have a garage sale with the stuff and then use the money to redecorate some of the rooms. I'm addicted to watching it (much to Mark's dismay). Kim & Aggie Rock!

I think Oprah has a show coming up about a family living in literally tons of garbage -- in a pretty large home. I think the tag line was something like " you never know what happens behind closed doors."

I haven't seen this show but I have watched Clean House a few times. Honestly those shows are as stagged and they come. When they show the cluttered rooms, with the clothes strewn about and all of that, you can almost tell that some production assistant came in minutes before the cameras did and made the place look 10 times worse than it really is. And I'm sure that along with having their 15 minutes of fame, and a clean house, there is some compensation involved for appearing on the show.
I do believe that there are people who have the compulsion to hoard things. And it is a mental illness that can be treated. But those people are not on shows like that.

I havent seen the show. Its funny to see what some people would do to get on a television show, no matter what the circumstances are. I doubt that there is any kind of $$ involved, it probably just to have someone clean the house & to be on tv so they can show their friends.

I just watched a re-run on cable only an hour or so ago. The woman on this one lived in some basement flat and hadnt cleaned her house for .....wait for it........24 YEARS! the filth! jeez I nearly puked. Have these people no shame? how can they life like that? she couldnt remember the last time she changed her bedclothes, "I dont know, i know its years" she said. When Kim and Aggie returned the place was well on the way to its former glory, she hadnt lifted a finger to clean. suprise suprise.
I love the show though, just dont be eating or drinking ANYTHING while your watching it.
