January 28, 2007 -- A great personality and sense of humor won't get you very far at a new speed-dating event - where only perfect 10s and million-dollar bank accounts need apply.
The "Natural Selection Speed Date: Rich Guys & Hot Girls" session will boil the matchmaking process down to its bare essentials: sex and money.
"Guys like hot girls. Everybody knows that," said Jeremy Abelson, who is organizing the event. "Girls like rich guys, and everybody knows that. Why not bring the upper crust of society together?"
Abelson said he's already been hounded by hate calls from feminists about his version of "natural selection." He said they can tell it to Darwin.
"We're talking about a proven genetic theory," he said.
The event is scheduled for Feb. 7 at the posh Bruno Jamais Restaurant Club on East 81st Street. Abelson said it is part of a promotion for his high-end lifestyle newsletter, Pocket Change, and is being done in conjunction with New York magazine.
So far, more than 300 men and 300 women have applied. Only 40 of each will be chosen.
He said the men must submit a detailed financial statement (which will be checked) including salary, investment capital and trust-fund money.
"There is no attractiveness standard at all for the men," he said.
The women, meanwhile, need to send in five photos of themselves. The pics will be judged by matchmaking guru Janis Spindel.
The guys will each have to pay a $500 entry fee, the women $50 - though Abelson said the cover may be waived for particularly hot women.
Abelson said it's natural for men to choose a women on looks alone.
"When you talk to a guy, the first question out of his mouth is 'Is she hot?' " he said.
Organizers have already chosen a handful of men and women for the event, including two models and a pair of blond, green-eyed twins.
One of the women is J.Lo look-alike Alissa Jo Caputo, a Fashion Institute of Technology advertising student and part-time model. She said her friends think it's a great idea.
"They think it's fun," she said. "It's cutting right down to the chase, there's no secrets. It's just what it is."
The guys who have been chosen so far have requested anonymity. But they purportedly include Simon S., who has a $20 million trust fund, and David A., a real-estate mogul who has more than $30 million.
If the guys think their cash alone is going to land them a model, they may want to think again.
"I agree that women like guys with money," Caputo said. "But as far as I go, what are you going to do if the guy is a nasty idiot? What, are you to do? Go with him just because he has money?"
