Duran Duran were joined onstage for the song PLANET EARTH by Brandon Flowers & Dave Keuning from the Las Vegas based band, The Killers, who have been vocal about being influenced by Duran Duran. It was a terrific performance - be on the look out for more photos in the new and improved GALLERY!

www.dosomething.org/celebsgonegood/DuranDuranrockLV*the article uses the same pictures that were posted at dd.com Date: Friday night, May 9 Place: backstage at The Joint at the notorious Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Musicians present: the evening's headliners, 80s music heroes Duran Duran, with various members of The Killers and AFI frontman Davey Havok. But even with all of those rock stars, what happened in Vegas needn't stay in Vegas. Davey, for seventeen years a follower of straight edge (which means he has avoided alcohol, drugs and smoking since age 15), chilled with one of his idols, the 13-years-sober Duran bassist John Taylor. ("Duran Duran's first album was the second album I bought ever," Davey told CGG. The first? "AC/DC's Back in Black.") Meanwhile a bow-tied, tuxedo jacket-wearing Brandon Flowers nervously waited to take the stage with a few fellow Killers for a surprise songalong during Duran's encore. Davey talked to CGG about being straight-edge. "I know it can be tempting to kids, but I want them to realize that they just don't need [to smoke, drink or do drugs]," he said, (FYI: Some straight-edgers also refrain from caffeine and promiscuous sex.) Davey has also been a vegan (someone who doesn't eat animal products or wear leather) for more than a decade. "I'm Italian, so at first it was hard to give up cheese, but honestly, once it's out of your life, you don't miss it." Should Davey's vicelessness make him appear rather un-rock star-like, consider this: AFI's music is edgy, and so is his look. On Friday, he looked every inch the rock god in his all-black attire, including black eyeliner, which was set off by a striking, hot-pink Marc Jacobs blazer that he proudly proclaimed he bought "on sale", along with his signature lip ring. By the way: "straight edge" is actually very punk rock. Literally. The term was coined in 1980 after the title of a song by the punk band Minor Threat. Have you ever gone straight-edge? Let us know here! P.S. Brandon told CGG that the Killers' third CD, coming this fall "is better than the other two" -- which has us pretty excited, since Hot Fuss (featuring one of CGG's favorite singles ever, "Mr. Brightside") and the Bruce Springsteen-sounding Sam's Town are both must-haves. P.P.S. Speaking of CDs, Duran's Red Carpet Massacre, which features Justin Timberlake, Timbaland and Nate "Danja" Hills, pokes a bit of fun at the Hollywood's hot messes on its title track, imagining what it's like to be one of the actresses who take the whole red-carpet scene a little too seriously!
