I couldn't name a song by this band, not if my life depended on it. The only thing I know about them is that one of them is married to Gwyneth Paltrow - that can't hurt in the publicity dept., huh?
Let's see if anybody remembers them in a few years, or if they have the longevity, fan dedication, and sustaining talen that DD has.

Money is being spent on Coldplay because (arguably) they are the biggest band in the world. Yet again comparing DD with Coldplay or Madonna or anyone in that league is just plain stupidity. Coldplay can get on any show or in any magazine or sell out gigs and CD's because there is a huge audience out there for them and will be for some time to come. DD had its day in 1984 and for the most part they haven't been commercially successfull in 25 years (apart from the Wedding Album, 15 long years ago of course).
Sony did spend money on DD. They hired the most expensive producer in the world..... It all went wrong when they wrote and recorded Falling Down with Timberlake. Once this was decided to be the lead single (in favour of Night Runner) the Timberland work was immediately to the background. The song (FD) was all but ignored by radio as they didn't like it. The video was a commercial mistake. Trying to be contravertial doesn't suit Duran. It worked for Girls On Film but that was a looooong time ago. It didn't work for Electric Barbarella which got banned and bombed and although Falling Down wasn't banned as such, it just didn't get TV support unsurprisingly. It wasn't emotive and didn't take you to where say Ordinary World or Perfect Day did on the screen. They also decided to base themselves in NY for almost 3 weeks (a lifetime in promotion terms) to play 10 gigs to 1,000 a night - commercial suicide. There should have been one gig and then off to other cities. The world tour wasn't in November but in March so while people are reviewing the album now (as you would expect behind a tour) because the album didn't take off (which is not the fault of TV or Sony) AND because sales of albums are so low and the single is almost dead and buried things won't turnaround.
The idea that if they put a single out the album would sell is rediculous. I think if it was your product and your budget and you spent loads on a video, you spent loads travelling to support it, you spent loads on a producer and you were now in debt you might not go and spend hundreds of thousands of pounds on a new video and similar amounts pressing up singles when if you are realistic, if Falling Down co written with Timberlake can be an absolute flop and most of your singles in the past 15 years have sold poorly is it a safe bet to invest more money in this? I don't know.... Everyone will have an opinion and will have a desire to have a product out there but you have to make commercial decisions too.
The wrong decisions were made and in this climate (and for the last 10 years) if the lead single isn't a hit for the most part the album is a gonner.

Yeah ... Coldplay is still pretty hot right now. ... They could get a number one album all over the world. ... They did with X&Y. But as always ... their star will fade ... and someone new will come on top. ... But who knows when that will happen ... And it did happen to DD. ~ "Wolf" PS ... I like coldplay.

Coldplay are a damned good live band (I've seen them twice), and one of the few mega-popular acts I actually like.

Bloodshift,
I would not go as far and say they are a good live band! If they were so good they wouldn't offer 2 free concerts one in New York and one in London because according to Chris Martin they sucked on some of their shows on the last tour! I think it's a great idea and good promotion to offer a free concert but not at the cost of downgrading your live performance!
I wish DD's management, band and if they still have a record company see what Coldplay is doing! I don't think they will have the longevity of DD but they are a pretty good band!

Offering or not offering free shows is not an indication of how good or how bad a band is.

Offering or not offering free shows is not an indication of how good or how bad a band is. Took the words right out of my mouth, my dear! When I think of the number of great and/or popular artists who have put on free shows now and then throughout their career (DD among them; remember the Capitol Records parking lot show in 1988?), I can only guess that you were attempting humour.

There is going to be a Coldplay special on the CBC this Friday which I plan on catching.
I'm not a big fan of the band but their appearance at live 8 with Richard Ashcroft was amazing.

Why dont we do a massive fan world wide promotion.
IDK ... Make our own CD's of Skin Divers ... and put on it "Fans for Duran Duran. ... Apart of a massive worldwide promotion. ... Our web site is..." yada yada yada lol
It could work ... more fans then there are people on a promotion team located in a few areas of the world.
