I never read in any interview where DD said they were inspired by Japan. I read David Bowie, Roxy Music....etc. never Japan. I think John mensioned Japan a couple of times and Nick mentioned their album Tin Drum as influencing Arcadia's sound -- I also think they existed as bands at the same time so were kind of rivals or just too busy getting on with their music to look at each other -- Japan kind of over-lapped DD's existance - they were around before and then just as they were getting recognition they split up - around the time DD were rising up in the public eye.

david sylvian and nick looked so much alike in those days, it's creepy Funny. I recall there was a time too when David Sylvian looked strikingly like John Taylor (and both were vying for 'most fanciable male').

They came out around the same time I agree, but I don't agree that Duran Duran copied anyone's style. Nick and John were very creative and knew what they wanted to look like and are true originals. The hairstyles were the look of those times and I don't they copied anyone.

Oh being influenced by someone does not mean you copy someone...
DD were very influenced by Japan and David Sylvian between 1978 and 81 more or less, they wanted to be like them in terms of being and art school band, like Japan was in those times, that does not mean they copy them, but they were really influenced by Japan. If you hear songs like life in Tokyo you will notice some similarities with the vocal style, it is normal when you admire a band like that. It's a way to discover your own way on music.

another way to see the way Japan influenced DD is in the many Japan fans (like me) who moved across to DD at the same time as Japan split up and DD's star rose up -- we could see they were both reading off the same page -- it was like a mass 'cross pollonation' as it were
*sorry about all the metaphors*
