Yeah the Korea unity was cool last time, and was hoping for that again. I believe you're right about Afghanistan but that's when the damn phone rang.

Watching a rerun on NBC right now! They're raising the Olympic flag, very cool! Yao Ming marching in with that little boy who survived the earthquake was great...

Yeah, I don't understand why we're "friends" with Saudi Arabia (yeah I do, oil). They have one of the worst human rights records of any country in the world. I thought Iran also didn't allow women to compete.
It sucks that the Koreas have taken a step back, the way things were going several years ago they should have been marching as one country by now. If anything though, North Korea has become even more isolated and paranoid.

I was so excited to see that Li Ning got to light the torch. I used to love watching him.

Yeah, the way they lit the torch was very cool! Though it must have been pretty nerve-wracking for Ning to have to 'run' around the entire upper cirumference of the stadium. That thing is huge! Loved the shot of Yao holding the little boy on his (very tall) shoulder so he could see, very cute!
ETA: Here's video of the torch being lit:

Well these games are already marred-an American tourist was stabbed to death and another injured in a random attack.

I saw that on the CBC news this morning - very sad and weird. My guess is that will be buried in the coverage, though.
My friend Joan and I were marvelling at how, during that huge beautiful glorious retelling of China's history, they somehow neglected to cover the tiny little unimportant event of the rise of Communism and Mao Tse-Tung. I mean, I know it was but a blip in China's history and nobody remembers it but certainly it was worth a mention...? ;-)
Oh well! The costumes were pretty and the Chinese put on a spectacular show that nevertheless reminded all watching that they are so huge and well-organized they could easily whip any country's ass in a war. I'm sure that was unintentional too...
ETA the torch-lighting was cool, but nothing beats Barcelona's flaming arrow!!
