Back in the day, I did an interview with Andrew Day. Actually his first concept for the Medazzaland cover looked like this. No joke, really!

Back in the day, I did an interview with Andrew Day. Actually his first concept for the Medazzaland cover looked like this. No joke, really! hope the picture is up now Well then... Those of you who dislike the actual cover, I guess it could have been worse! I actually really like the cover of Medazzaland. As soon as I saw the defaced images of the band members (not to mention the iconic cover image from RIO), I got where they were going with it. The idea of skewering your own image, peeling back the gloss to get at the grittier reality, and even the shallowness of fame, which ties in with some of the lyrics on the album (in particular Undergoing Treatment), as well as to some extent Too Much Information and even Pop Trash, is great, and it showed me that Duran Duran were growing up lyrically and thematically. When U2 did something like this (ZOO TV) they got lauded for being able to turn their image on its head...Duran Duran did it (Admittedly not as well) and got ignored (Capitol's lack of marketing, and not even releasing the album outside the US certainly didn't help). Besides, like I said, apparently it could have been much worse (though I do get a bit of a 'Radiohead Paranoid Android video' feel form the alternate cover)!

Do you have this full interview? I'd love to read all he had to say about Medazzaland art. To me it's a great album (maybe my favorite Duran album) with great artwork, besides Andrew Day did an excellent job in The Devils and Warren solo CDs artworks too. By the way this "original" Medazzaland cover looks like one page of Dark Circles booklet. Andrew has an unique style which fits perfectly with Duran Duran, I guess. It's modern, full of interesting details. You can sit down with Medazzaland artwork and keep finding more and more hidden details... I'd love to see him working with band again, I'm sure it would be another great art coming from this.

The Medazzaland cover.......never have been able to fully decide if I like it or not.......and so I kinda like it just because I'm intrigued by it (not unlike a lot of the album itself). It's a bit to take in. Kinda reminds me of a cross between some Radiohead and Cure graphic design stuff.
That "boy we dodged a bullet with that one" cover posted in this thread.....whew.

To me it's a great album (maybe my favorite Duran album) with great artwork It's certainly my favourite Duran album of the 90s, and yeah, I like the artwork too! Really hoping we'll get a 'deluxe edition' one day with a DVD of the two videos (sure I'm right in thinking Out Of My Mind is still not available commercially anywhere), the EPK they did for it, plus maybe a live performance from the era.
