I didn't get an ego vibe from the interview. He sounds sincere in liking what he's done with the band. Ultimately it is the band writing and performing the songs. Ronson is just there to guide them and bring out the best in each song, so I can see where he can separate himself from the songs and simply say Duran has made a great album.
However, I don't like to hear all this talk about it being the same vibe as Rio. They have said this countless of times in the past (or some variation about going back to their roots) and I have always been disappointed. So this talk is just setting me up for another disappointment.
One more thing: I remember the band promoting AVTAK in '85 and Nick talking about the movie being "one of the better Bond films". Well, as history has shown AVTAK is one of, if not THE worst Bond film made. So from that point on I knew that the band always has to say "It's the best we've ever done" when they promote their latest album, whether they really believe it or not.

I spent a couple of hours with Mark Ronson recently when he invited me to sit in on his East Village Radio show. I'm not saying this to brag, but rather to come to his defense. I have talked with this man, shaken his hand and shared cigarettes, worn his headphones and looked into his eyes while he shared new material with me. Why me? It's certainly not because I'm a big-time journalist or anything special at all, because I'm neither of those things. But I am a fan, and so is he. Mark treated me with the same honesty and respect that any Duranie would show another. I can smell bullshit a mile away, and when people squawk about Ronson's "ego," they could not be further from the truth. Ronson's job is to be a music producer. Even with those skills, he feels the same unimaginable pressure that you or I might feel if suddenly tasked with making a great Duran Duran album. He feels it deeply, and it is a heavy burden. Just think about that and put yourself in his shoes for one moment. Ronson is doing everything he possibly can to pull the absolute best from this band, using every personal and professional resource available. Ultimately, it's up to Duran Duran to make a great record, but with every fiber of my being, I feel that Mark Ronson is the best choice to be the producer and advocate for this band and I will continue to support him one hundred percent, no matter what happens. Awesome post, Kitty. From what comparatively little that I've learned about Mark Ronson, he seems like a down to earth guy who still feels like the same geeky music fan he was growing up, and still has to pinch himself when it comes to his success and the idols he gets to meet/work with. Getting a sense of huge ego coming from this guy could be a simple case of good old fashioned projection...

Great post Kitty. Now, I've not met Ronson, but I know people who have and I've only ever heard good things about him. He's a really lovely bloke from what I hear. I've never understood why people think he's arrogant or big-headed. He cares greatly about music and he understands what real music should sound like. I have nothing but complete respect for the guy.

Well said, Kitty. Can't wait to hear about your insights. Agreed on both points.

Justin Timberlake did say he was a fan but in no other way did he help the band with the promotion of RCM or any of the songs he was involved in. In fact i dont remember him talking about working with Duran at all apart from in the studio video things.(not that he had to of course)
All im saying is dont compare what that tool (Justin) did or said with what Mark Ronson is doing for the band right now with all the good press hes getting for them and excitement hes giving me with his comments and enthusiasm about the new record. The mans a bloody legend in my eyes im going to one of his gigs next month and cant wait! (Think i might wear my DD t-shirt for it too! lol)

Let me get this straight.
Mark Ronson is doing FREE PUBLICITY for Duran Duran...and someone is unhappy about it??
I suppose it would be better if Ronson said NOTHING, like Timba and Justin Timberlake did, eh? Yeah, their marked LACK of promotion did wonders for RCM, didn't it?
We, as fans, should be doing cartwheels that Ronson likes the band enough to give them a hand with promotion - especially since, without a label, it might be the ONLY promotion their new album gets.
Is the album any good? Who knows? But I'll take Ronson over Mr. "Give me my paycheck and let me out of here" Timbaland any day of the week.

And besides that point, I'm not talking about PLUGGING the album. You people are misreading me. It's the way he talks about it. He's smug. You are entitled to your opinion, but I don't see it at all. I think he has always sounded like HE is the lucky one to know them.
