i work in the music industry and i think it's a genius idea!!
millions of people who aren't duran fans would go on there in a day and people love free tracks, so that could mean so many young people who might not even really know the band or their legacy are getting the first hit free!!

Just speculating here, but IF iTunes really made the mistake and released the tracks early, they may have worked out a deal with DD where they will make the single free for one day, but still pay the band their full commission on those downloads. Win-win.

the best thing would be downloading it more than one time so that it can better chart... a

Def. a good idea! ... More people will download the song and hear it because it's free! ... What is with Duran Duran this time with this album!? ... Seriously ... Moving release dates ahead ... giving things up for free ... and its with a album that seems to have a lot going for it. ... I feel like the moons are once again aligning for the band! ... Woo hoo! lol

Don't get me wrong - it's really cool, I'm just surprised since they've worked so hard to keep this under wraps until the release date. Their facebook said something about how this is an early Christmas present from the band - and hey, that's pretty cool. I hate to say it, but the reality is that they might not be losing a horrible amount of money on the first day of sales in order to create a little buzz....regardless, I will download my copy and be on my merry little way! And think of it this way... if a few people who download it for free are tempted to pay $10 or so for the whole album, that's more money for the band possibly in the end (at the sacrifice of a $1 per track or so). I'm not privy to business details, but this could be something good for the band in the end. If anything, it's new for them, especially if itunes promotes it as its free track of the week or whatever.

Given that everybody's going to just rip it from YouTube or share it illegally, they might as well give it away. I wonder if they'll give away the album for a day or two as well?

Not "everyone" will do anything of the sort. Never mind the piracy implications: YouTube rips sound as shitty as YouTube videos look. I don't think you're going to see the album given away for free either. And why should you?

Here's hoping it does well, we don't want critics saying, "They couldn't GIVE it away..."

Why does it matter what the critics say?
