Most critics get it wrong these days anyway. Just as an example, Pitchfork Media (and almost every other review on the planet) gave critical acclaim to Kanye West's new album and a solid 10/10 when it's probably one of the most average albums ever made. It's not even up there with Kanye West's best albums, being nowhere near as good as College Dropout, Late Registration or Graduation (his first three albums).

Here's hoping it does well, we don't want critics saying, "They couldn't GIVE it away..." The 'debbie downers' on here are nothing if not consistent. Anyway, this is very cool. I can't wait to download and then proceed to BUY the album. Why in the world would they and should they give the album away for free?

I finally opened an iTunes account and, totally unexpectedly, I ended up buying a few of the download-only live albums. Fucking impulse buying!

Providing the track for free for the first day isn't the deal of the century if you want to buy the album...you'll still pay full price for the album come 12/21 so no big loss to Apple or the band. If they can convince 13% of the people that download the song for free to buy the album, they break even (for all intents and purposes).
I've said for a couple years now that DD's best direction would be an exclusive w/ iTunes, a direct physical release, and to embrace social media. Glad to see they're going this route. Hard core fans will buy multiple versions where 25 years ago there really was only one version to buy. Here's hoping it all works. I suspect the deal they have w/ Apple is a good one and a free track will generate some good buzz. I'll feel better when I see a write up on billboard.com...

We've just got off the phone with iTunes. The single will be live WORLDWIDE in a few hours. We promise it will be worth the (extra) wait.
