That was a nicely done review, and I agree about Girl Panic being a throbbing dance number being 'Taylor-made' for the stage ;D

I'm really glad he DIDN'T give them a free pass...that wouldn't have been right, fan or not.

Definitely a solid review by someone who clearly gets the band's history but wasn't going to simply give them a free pass if the new stuff sucked. I especially like the idea of the album recapturing more the spirit of early Duran Duran than the specific sound! Well thought out and well written, and I have to say I like the fact that the picture at the top includes Dom Brown...something you almost never see. It's almost as if he's a full member, and I have to say it looks pretty natural having him in there. Of course, they then proceed to not even mention him in the write up! I did want to credit Dom in the piece, but I had to write for a broad audience, and I was concerned some people just might not really give a toss. I may have dropped the ball though, as his work really shines.

Mark Ronson just tweeted a link to the review, which is pretty neat.

If he wasn't in the pic, it would be a non-issue. Actually, it probably is anyway.

especially like the idea of the album recapturing more the spirit of early Duran Duran than the specific sound! Well, it recaptures both. To say that it doesn't recapture the old sound would just be plain daft, because the influence of the early albums is so obvious throughout the entire record, especially on tracks such as "Being Followed", "The Man Who Stole A Leopard", "Runway Runaway", "Blame The Machines" and then "Mediterranea" from the EP/extended album release. Not to split hairs, but that would still be more the style of their playing than the sound, as they'd pretty much have to all have been playing their old instruments (I know John pulled out some reissue Aria basses on recent tours, but the sound I've heard so far has almost certainly not been the Aria, and Roger's said he has no intention of going back to his old drum kit setup/brand of cymbals, etc.). and been recorded and mixed by Colin Thurston (most certainly not possible), in order to really match that legendary sound of the first two records. Of course, when I've heard the full album, more specific sounds might jump out that really do take me back to the good ol' days. In any event, no matter the semantics, I'll bet we agree on this: a general return in style and spirit (and maybe even sound) to their heyday is a good thing, and is a big part of why the new songs are being received well so far!

When I woke up this morning and saw the review, there was actually an Astronaut-era shot with Andy alongside the other guys. I asked my editor to change it to something more current, suggesting that pic in particular as it was an official shot posted on their Twitter feed. Dom does look like he belongs there, and he sounds it too.

Absolutely! It's subjective anyway, as different people will always hear different things.
