I am crazy for the funky bass line of Cry Baby Cry. Fantastic Me, too. His bass playing in general, it's like pure sex on strings. Nicely put!!!

In no particular order:
Girls on Film Planet Earth (one of the few times he uses a pick, and that attack is what drives the song) Anyone Out There Faster Than Light Rio Hungry Like the Wolf Last Chance on the Stairway Of Crime and Passion Shadows on Your Side Notorious Proposition Sin of the City Virus (OK, so it IS in order...chronological, that is)
So many more, but these are the ones that come to mind first!

Tough question but the answer's got to be on DD81 or Rio. Sound of Thunder, Girls on Film, Rio, Anyone Out There, Planet Earth -- lots of choices but definitely DD81 or Rio. I'm leaving stuff out but from those albums the best bass line is the one you're listening to. Just brilliant stuff. DD is all about the combination of things but the bass lines stick out.

Gotta agree with figital -- the bass in Khanada is freaking spiritual. Probabaly my favorite. John was just out of his mind on the first two albums and especially the b-sides. Faster Than Light -- good stuff. Between the "air" of Nick's keyboards, Simon's coldness, Andy's sharp guitar work, the beat from Roger and John, the first two albums are just brilliant. And when you seen the instructional videos of John's bass work on you tubeyou just appreciate it even more. DD is a great band -- don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Rob You are so right: from the first 2 albums the best bassline is the one you are listening to. No matter how many times you've listened to anything from those to records it never gets old. I do think that
New Religion is narrowly in the lead for me- maybe because the song is build so much around the bass, you really can't ignore its greatness.

A lot of great ones, but Last Chance on the Stairway is "The Bassline".

A lot of great ones, but Last Chance on the Stairway is "The Bassline". I so agree! Every new Duran album after SATRT has left me a bit cold regarding basslines, I mean there's always the odd track like Proposition on Notorious or Nice on Astronaut but generally I've been underwhelmed. But with this new album John is back big time - welcome back dude!
