Pretty much all of the stuff from the first two albums qualifies as "shit hot" ('Rio' is the pick of that particular litter). And I'm glad to see at least one person mentioned 'Skin Trade', which John said at the time was the best he ever played. In fact, I challenge somebody to name a bad one from his entire career.
But one I never see come in for any praise is 'Taste The Summer'; I'm well aware that the song itself isn't a favourite of many people (I like it because I'm weird) but that particular bass track is a total fucking monster.

And these are the ones (IMHO) after 1985, that are in the (not the same, but close) league of the 1981-1985 era: Hold Me Skin Trade (this is in the same league, as i mentioned it before) Liberty Sin Of The City Nice Pretty Ones Mediterranea Being Followed Girl Panic Safe Runway Runaway Good points on that post . . . Hold Me and Liberty have some great bass -- more sophisticated songs than the first two albums. And I think Pretty Ones is one of the true gems of the DD catalogue -- it's such a throwback to earlier DD.

Ya can't go wrong with the bass line in Rio! I'm digging the bass in Girl Panic. Can't wait to hear that (and all the other new stuff) live.

I'm a bassist as well and there are a lot that I just love to play.
So, I don't know what his "best" ones are. The earlier ones "define" the songs a little more.
I love to play
Nice (to me, this one is perfect) Rio Late Bar My Own Way (so many different versions!) Sin Of The City
And just about everything else... I currently like playing Being Followed.
