For some reason I'm really not getting anything from this track. I don't like the fact that the song rips so much of The Chauffeur music. There are two tracks on the album that lend too much on The Chauffeur Can't please everyone I guess, but isn't this what we've been wanting to be able to say for 25 years... " awesome, this sounds like The Chauffeur!" I'd love to replace "Safe" with another Chauffeuresque song! The Chauffeur is one of their best songs ever. Easily top 5. The video is kinda silly though. No you can;t! The Chauffeur is in their Top 10 best songs no doubt, and I love it, but I don't want its sounds and chord changes on other songs! I was already reminded by it after listening to The Man who stole a Leopard so to have another even more similar song at the end of the album made me feel that it was overkill.

No song is "the new" anything, to me. They're all just DD songs inspired or based on elements from previous DD songs. Don't get me wrong, I'm absolutely over the moon about this album, but I just take it for what it is: Some of the best songs DD have written in at least 20 years that I can relate to some of the best work in their back catalogue. Pretty much agree with this. It's an album full of new music but most of it borrows elements from the first three albums and then bits and bobs from "The Wedding Album", "Liberty" and "Medazzaland". Your have Rio moments (Runway Runaway, Mediterranea, Girl Panic), Duran Duran moments (Being Followed, The Man Who Stole A Leopard) and then you have tracks like Leave A Light On which sounds like The Wedding Album or Liberty. Blame The Machines, which has the distinct Rio sound, could also be taken from the Medazzaland recording sessions because of it's vague similarity to Electric Barbarella. And yeah, Before The Rain is a fantastic song (Minus that electronic snare drum roll; Roger, use accoustic drums, for God's sake!). Think you'll find they are military drums! Not "electric snare drums" at all. See here: A little bit of the best of each decade/album, that' what I said in another thread. It's like a box of quality street, there is something there or every Duran Duran fan

I don't agree with your notion that these two songs sound so much like the Chauffeur that it's "overkill". Personally, the only song that sounds remotely like The Chauffeur to me is "The Man Who..." and that's primarily due to the piano riff - other than that, aside from its esoteric/atmospheric nature, it's got its own identity. "Before the Rain" doesn't come close, to me anyway. I'm just glad there's nothing on here akin to "Skin Divers" or "Nite Runner".

The same synth sequence is played from the intro i.e. the string you here in it. It's obviously there to bring some nostalgia, but I think the song doesn't really need this. I find it a bit distracting 100% agreement with your last statement! ;D

Gabby - are you referreing to the strings in "The Man Who..."? They are more reminiscent of "Tel Aviv". There are indeed elements from great Duran songs of the past in this song (and throughout this album), and I love it... and MAN, Simon's vocals are stunning. If you really take in the note and time changes in this song it's almost hard to imagine how they came up with it considering it's very dynamic... and, IMNSHO, fooking brilliant.

No the distorted ones at the beginning of before the rain, they're playing a slightly mutated version of The Chauffeur's piano riff.

No the distorted ones at the beginning of before the rain, they're playing a slightly mutated version of The Chauffeur's piano riff. I truthfully don't hear that at all. Not arguing with you, just saying that the beginning doesn't sound like Chauffeur at all to me. ONLY the rhythmic riff does a little - the 909 hi-hat/clap/conga thing after a minute or so, but it's a different tempo and sequence altogether. At this point, though, it's like TRYING to find similarities. This is a unique track unlike any prior, to me.

For me, "Leopard" sounds like "To The Shore" at the very start, then the synth keys come in and all of a sudden it's "The Chauffeur" then as the song progresses it gains it's own unique identity, albeit with strings from "Tel Aviv" appearing here and there. It's more "Tel Aviv" than it is "The Chauffeur".
"Before The Rain" appears to have the same melody as "The Chauffeur" at the beginning but using strings rather than synth keys. Occasionally it starts to go in another direction but then pulls back as the TR-808 synth drums come into play (which are the exact same ones Nick used on "The Chauffeur"). Then Roger comes in and it sounds the same as the part in "The Chauffeur" where Roger starts playing! Definitely the sequel to "The Chauffeur", but that's hardly a bad thing. Even the lyrics are quite similar.

To me "Before the Rain" reminds me of Stings "Russians" The chanting verse and the mood of the song gets me there rather than to Chauffeur. But the "Handclap-drums" from Chauffeur is definately there - I think it is so great the way they decided to include some of their old sounds, but in a completely new way. It doesn't sound old at all...

I agree with the OP. Before The Rain has some Seventh Stranger feel, definitely.
But the best track, like for a mile or so, is The Man Who Stole A Leopard. That track is already in my favourites of all time.
