what is the difference between night and extended version? sorry im not an old school duranie but i always thought night or extended versions are the same. I may be incorrect (if so I'm sure someone will correct me), but the Night Versions from early in the band's career weren't created through remixing existing tracks, but were instead re-arranged versions of the song performed by the band much in the same way they might have recorded the original song. That's terribly long-winded, for which I apologize. That's my understanding too. There are only two "Night Versions" really! Girls on Film Planet Earth My Own Way was re-recorded for the album not the other way round. All the others are "lazy!" remixed and extended versions really!

In its simplest definition, IMO, Night Version simply means a longer version of the song with extended instrumental sections meant for nighttime (ie dancing). How the song is extended doesn't matter. The band actually used three different methods to achieve this:
Planet Earth/GOF: Completely new arrangments recorded as their own entities, with nothing cut and pasted from the original master of the short versions of the song.
My Own Way: Master tape of the rhythm section cloned and extended, with new elements recorded on top
HLTW/Rio: True extended remixes created entirely from the master tapes of the original album versions (and not lazily at all IMO...they both stand for me as examples of the right way to do an extended version), with no new elements added (well, except for the rising oohs that start right after "you make me feel alive, alive, alive" line in Rio, which I believe I read were recorded for the Kershenbaum remixing (and are also in his US album and single remixes), and were not extra unused elements from the original master). They follow the traditional instrumental verse/chorus followed by essentially the original song (although with a better mix on HLTW and the awesome extended middle break in Rio where we hear John's bass without the sax, then with it).
I think the reason why they stopped using the Night Version term was more because they started doing more elaborate (and stranger) remixes like the Mosnter Mix of ITSISK and the Monkey Mix of UOTS, not because they felt that only a true re-recording was a Night Version.

these 2 songs you mentioned are very different from others people's lives. other people's lives is a very modern song. only johns bass is rio era sounding. nick's synths are very modern ,dom's guitars are full of effects rogers drumming very current sounding but above all the melody is absolutely 2011 duran not 80's at all. Sorry, but I disagree. I think the mixing is very modern (i.e very 'polished' sounding and crisp) but the guitars, bass, drums and rhythm are definitely old school Duran. I agree that some of the synths are modern sounding, but the apeggiator synth on the chorus is the same one that Nick used for 'Hold Back The Rain', so the chorus has the full 'old school' sound IMHO. 'Being Followed' would be a good candidate for a night version, but I'd much rather have one for 'Runway Runaway' (which isn't long enough to begin with) and 'Too Bad You're So Beautiful' (which is so good that it deserves a night version).

Did anyone notice that when you hear it in the media player it says 'all you need is now - the night versions? That's how it saved in my iTunes - it created a new folder w/this title! I hope there's more too!

Maybe they'll sell a limited EP 12" with new night versions!! In that case, will they pospone it as they did many times with AYNIN?
