Hey all. I've got a problem and I'm hoping that one of the collectors here has an idea on how to deal with this. I just received a poster I won off of Ebay (non Duran, can you believe it?) and although it was sent in a tube, the middle section of the tube got dented pretty good and that has affected the poster in an adverse way (crinkles!). It's quite an old poster - from 1981/1982 - and it's on a heavy paper stock, not glossy. Any idea of how to smooth out / take care of the crinkles? I was thinking of using an iron to sort it out.

if you dare to use an iron, make sure you put it on the lowest setting, empty ALL of the water out of the iron and use something non colouring/non staining in between the iron and the poster. and only iron on the back of the poster. steer clear of any bits with ink or colours. (i used plain white paper for my tests)
i've only ever tried this on my posters edges. i got some dd posters from france that got crumpled on the edge and i used the above method to sort it out a bit. it didn't 100 percent fix the crumples, but it made them lay flat and be a lot less noticeable. and since they were on the white edges it didn't put any heat near the coloured parts of the poster, so there was no fading or any damage to the posters beyond what was there and i found it did actually improve the looks of the creases that the posters had in them.
for your issues, i suggest that you try it on a small patch/edge or corner to see how you go.
so what band was it for??
and be sure to let us know how you make out with the repairs...

I'll try what you've suggested. The poster is for Elvis Costello. I was gutted when I pulled the poster out of the tube and saw what the dent had done. Hopefully I can repair it with the method you mentioned. I'll keep you posted!

Have it dry mounted. I had a similar problem. Likely a VERY HEAVY object landed on the tube. Would not think it possible, but there you go.

normally dry mounting on linen is the best thing to preserve the value and the actual paper of the poster. that might actually be a good thing to try. it's more expensive for sure, but it can yield good results. i had good luck with a mount on linen to take ripples out of a poster that had been squashed into an ellipse. whatever you do, don't mount it on foamcore...that's not normally archival quality and it normally makes the value of your piece go down.
