I am asking this here because so many of you seem to be very technically savvy and I need help. I need a free program to rip my ADITM DVD to my computer. For one thing, I want it on my I-Pod. I also really would like a backup disc so I can put the expensive as hell Japanese DVD away before it winds up damaged just from being out and about. I had seen something saying Handbrake works well, but I tried it and it took forever and then seemed to suddenly stop when oly around 60% finished and the result was a highly pixelated video with bad sound. Please point me in the right direction to a safe download of something easy to understand that will work for me. Keep in mind, I need something that doesn't require I know a lot about file sizes and speeds and all the technical stuff. I appreciate it.

Audio or video? Mac or PC?
Doesn't iTunes allow for this? I don't use iTunes, so cannot answer.
Otherwise, there is nothing easy and free. If you would like to pay a few dollars to get a good program that you will (apparently) use on a regular basis, I would try DVDFab.

dvd audio extractor is a great way to get the audio out- it's $30 for lifetime licence

I want the video on my PC. I want to make a backup disc to watch on my DVD player. I don't like having my Japanese copy out where something can get damaged accidentally and want to put it away. I would also like to add the whole thing to my I-Pod. I just got a brand new computer, though and I have not set it up yet, but the description on Best Buy's site said it comes with Nero 10. I was told by a FB friend to try Nero. I know nothing about that. Has anyone used it before?

backing up the dvds is easy...you need 2 pieces of free software to do it. dvd shrink www.dvdshrink.org/dvd decrypter www.dvddecrypter.org.uk/dvd shrink will make your region 2 dvd-9 (dual layer) disc into a dvd-5 disc dvd decrypter will make it region 0 and burn it onto a normal blank dvd i don't know about getting them on a ipod tho' this is exactly what i did with my japanese copy of ADITM.

Thank you. Doing this way, does it still have the menu or does it just play through start to end? Are the tracks divided?

it makes an exact duplicate of the dvd contents, it just makes it smaller...so it goes from being 6 or 7 gb to being 4.5gb to fit on a single layer blank dvd.

I will try that. It doesn't matter if the video will not play due to region, does it? It just takes the files right from the disc and converts them, right?

DVD Decrypter will remove all encryption and region coding. You can choose to rip individual streams (audio or video or both). The audio will be ac3, and will need to be converted to something your music player will recognize (and it may already recognize ac3 audio). You can use BeSweet to convert the audio.
DVDShrink re-encodes the video at a lower bit-rate, so the quality will be diminished. Although if you are content watching it on your iPod(?) then it shouldn't matter.
