Arguably the highest profile stars at this summer’s Exit Festival will be British pop band Duran Duran, who, fronted by the charismatic Simon Le Bon, will hold their concert on 12 July, the festival’s opening night. Speaking for Blic, Duran Duran’s drummer Roger Taylor reveals the secret of the band’s longevity, but also how the band’s previous stay in Serbia went.
Roger Taylor
Your previous performance in Serbia was in 2006. What will you remember it by?
- I remember we were at a party on a boat after the show and cruised down the river. Everything was perfect until we nearly drowned. The boat started sinking and we had to abandon ship. But anyhow we had a great time and we are happy to be back.
Why did it take you so long to come to Serbia again?
- In the meantime we have recorded two albums, and it took two and a half each to record, and it’s simply a very long process. Also, all of us have our own families and we want to spend time with them. When you are touring globally, it takes a long time to get to visit everything you want.
Are you aware of how many fans you have in Serbia?
- I don’t know how many fans there are, but I hope there are many.
One of the things people love you here is that you always play your greatest hits at your shows.
- We believe this is something we owe our fans. I remember I was once at Madonna’s show and she never played Vogue, which is my favourite song. That’s why we always play our classics. Having said that, there will be certain songs from the latest album, which has been critically acclaimed.

Men around the world envy you because you are always surrounded by beautiful women. Do you have any words of comfort for them?
- Learn to play an instrument. Seriously. None of had that magical touch with girls – we were boring and clumsy and leading boring lives. The fact we started a band and learned to play was a great way of attracting girls.
What is the secret of your longevity?
- I don’t really know. It may be the fact we keep pushing boundaries and that could be something that’s kept us young. At first we were really nervous up on the stage, but once we had conquered that we became much better and the nerves turned into energy.
Aston Villa fan
Did you follow the football Euros and who do you support in the English game back home?
- I watched the Euros and supported England although the Spanish are truly amazing. I am an Aston Villa fan because I was born a few kilometres from Villa Park and my father used to take me to games.
