Track Listing of A Diamond in the Mind July 2nd, 2012
Hey Katy, the other day I was thinking about the new DVD ”Diamond In The Mind” that’s coming soon. Then the track list for the CD crossed my mind and who decides which tracks make it onto the CD. So I was wondering if you could ask the band if they have any involvement in which tracks make it onto the CD in the past and present live recordings. Many thanks, Jake
Hello Jake,
The band have always made final decisions about track listings on any of their products – other than compilations done without consent by record labels many years later. With the live show CD for A DIAMOND IN THE MIND, the track listing was dictating by our set list, and this discussion is never ending for Simon, John, Nick & Roger. For the UK tour, they arrived at a fairly lengthy show which spans their entire career and also introduces half a dozen songs from the “All you Need is Now” album. It the first time the band had done a proper live recording and film for some years, so they wanted it to be representative of Duran Duran in performance at this time.

"fairly lenghty show that spans their entire career"
well it wasn't thaaat long a show and to show off their career why didn't they record some of the warm up gigs that really showed off their entire career?
All they needed was some half decent lights, some broadcast cameras (hiring is not that expensive now) or even used some 5Dmk2's and feed the sound through a mixing desk to a recorder. In this day and age that is incredibly easy. They could have made it a bonus disc or a download even. Such a shame..

Those shows were great but ....
The venues were small, so cameras audience-side would have been in everyone's way. Also, what if it had all gone horribly wrong and Simon's voice had broken down again - they would not have wanted "the end" on film.

well they didn't have to release it if it was bad, but cameras could have been positioned fine - eps 5dmk2's

i think they have to think more commercially these days, you can buy live recording of gigs all the time (DM, Pearl Jam etc), they could have recorded them and made a bit.

Plus, they could have 'fixed' some bits here and there if needed, much like they have with ADITM, live autotune and overdubbing etc. And for them to have it would surely have been nice. They played some old songs, sounded great and seemed really relaxed. And recording just the audio would cost almost nothing as everything was going through the soundboard and could have just gone to a multi-channel recorder. Top quality ones are only a few hundred quid now. And a getting it mixed wouldn't have needed a top producer as the tracks aren't being re-written, just laid down as they were in the show. You'd need to be technically aware but it's not a huge task at all. Then they could have been either a download only or a blu-ray (5dmk2's would be fine for this) as a 'Up Close and Personal Show' show. A couple of 5d cameras in the audience, a couple fixed to the side/back of the stage and one low-light capable at the rear facing the stage. Again, with technology now all this is really not complicated or difficult. I don't like being negative about the band, I just think it is a shame they didn't release those shows with all those rare tracks, either in cd form or blu-ray form...

I'm worried about how many both the CD and DVD/Blu-Ray of ADITM are going to sell. None of the big supermarkets have the CD on the shelf. HMV had it displayed prominently but the DVD was tucked away on the shelf with all the other music DVDs. How are the "casual" fans who went to the UK gigs supposed to kknow they're out there?

I imagine most fans will be buying the deluxe version which I doubt influences the album chart position of ADITM. I can't imagine enough fans will have bought the standard CD version for it to trouble the top 75 sadly. Still, it's a great visual and audio recording which I have loved watching and listening to this week. Brough back many happy memories.

I just love it - have looked again at the pictures I took at Manchester and smiled all over again. Hope they're as good at Hyde Park on 27/7

Like I said in a previous thread, I thought this concert was better than the O2. The fans will love it, and that's what counts.
