I really think this would have been more popular had Duran released a short version for Vh-1 or any other Video show--maybe they stayed away with the 9 minute version?
I like this short version--they should have done both-short for commercial and long for the fans! They did not get it right with the video! I liked it but it was just too long...

I agree. It should have had a single length version and the video should have had a single length cut. Along with a 12" release, of course. I still just don't understand why Runway Runaway, Too Bad You're So Beautiful and Being Followed weren't released as singles. That album had so much potential......

There was a single length version. As for the video, well television doesn't really show videos the way they used to. They knew youtube and other video sites were where it was at, so I guess they thought why bother with an edited version.

If that is the case then everybody would be doing long versions..I just feel people's attention spans is not that long for longer videos..sure fans are fine but issue with the general public....

I thought it was very different and very Duran. In my opinion, they haven't done a really great video in a long time...and this was absolutely the perfect idea for a video for this song. So thanks to Nick and Yasmin! lol There is no more MTV, VH1, Friday Night Videos or anything like that anymore...like it was back in the day. So I agree that YouTube, Vimeo, and Vevo are the ways to go. That's where most music acts are putting their videos these days. Videos don't have to be a certain length anymore like they used to be. A longer video is great! I would actually prefer watching an extended version of a video from my favorite acts these days... A "short" video is so 80s!

There are elements of the video I really enjoy and find extremely interesting. However the major problem is that it is almost 10 minutes of interviews that only diehard fans like us would really enjoy. Overall it is extremely stop-start and hard to get into; there's no way that film clip would have done anything to garner new fans that a 4 minute clip could not.
Girl Panic is a great track, and having supermodels play Duran themselves is a fantastic idea. But outside this the band suffers from the "more is more" approach they often take, and so just whenever you started getting into the song you'd hear a bloody supermodel start to talk and you'd forget all about the amazing tune.
And what the hell is with those lesbian scenes? I mean if they really were trying to portray the band as being "Duran Duran", shouldn't all the groupies have been scantily clad young men??? I mean the band have never come out as gay have they, regardless of all the accusations and whispers while we were growing up. So why the hell would a heterosexual band, one renowned at indulging quite enthusiastically with the opposite sex, be surrounded by their own gender having it off with each other?
It doesn't matter to me whether any or all of Duran Duran are gay or straight, it won't affect my love for their music one iota. But what does matter is that the band, or whoever had the ridiculous idea of throwing it in there, lost a lot of credibility. Seriously, unnecessary risqué scenes in videos went out with the 80s. Duran Duran are so above throwing in something controversial just to get a handful of tongues wagging on Youtube.
If it made sense I wouldn't mind. If a member/s of the band had just come out loud and proud, or was just about to come out, then it might have held water. But when it's just there for controversy, and let's face it, extremely weak and virtually non-existent controversy, then that looks just extremely unoriginal and desperate. Duran Duran are just so much better than that, they really are.
So by all means, make your 10 minute video that diehard fans will love. As a fan video I really like it, and think it is quite clever in places. But please make it an 'added extra' - not the main event. Duran Duran should have had a really cool official film clip of the radio edit of Girl Panic, and gotten rid of the nonsensical lesbian scenes. They could leave the 10 minutes of indulgence as an unofficial fan gift. That would have been so much better.
And I'm not saying a "real" film clip to the radio edit of Girl Panic would have reversed Duran's fortunes and made them world megastars. It wouldn't have done anything better for the band. But at least it would have portrayed one of the strongest and catchiest songs the band have released since the 80s in a fitting light, and not just as a short artistic piece that gets more wrong than right.

I have always been a big supporter of Girl Panic. AYNIN was touted as DD's return to musical roots. For me no other song does this as successfully as GP. Some say that it sounds "just like" Girls on Film; while there may some similarities, if you listen to them back to back, they are really very different; but both are classic DD. So, yes, I think there should have been a shorter version released as the lead single.

True but some channels like Vh-1 does show videos late at night and on weekends and they do coutdowns--I remember Reach up for the Sunrise was in the top 20--would be nice to have a video under 4 minutes maybe to play in it's entirety for the casual or non duran fan....so hey they can say...are they still around? lol

I dont like cut versions unless they have been remixed to sound different. Why cut up a perfect work of art? If you had the mona lisa you wouldnt cut it in half and say there you go, a 7" version. Radio stations rarely play any new DD, and will cut things if they like. As for the video, I can see the idea of supermodels being DD, but I thought it was pretentious. They obviously based the video around the full length complete track, and for a video I would certainly expand on the elements and perhaps make an extended Night version. Perhaps only fans watch videos these days.

As for the video, I can see the idea of supermodels being DD, but I thought it was pretentious. That was the entire point of the video. They weren't trying to be pretentious but simply making fun of themselves. They've been around for over 30 years and have been not just teen idols but front runners in combining music, media and technology and now, elders of pop music. Whether the world thinks so or not, DD should be given more respect. But GP was a great song and perfect to showcase the main concept...and they have been associated with models their entire career. In my opinion, there is no way this is a pretentious video. Pretentious is having a mansion that has an interior decor of all white; sterile and materialistic instead of comfortable and inviting.
