Ten years or so ago Lindsay Lohan released 2 albums, one going platinum and the other one gold. So not too bad right? But... Out of the five singles she has released only one has made it to the charts in the US, reaching an almighty position of 57 back in 2005. So every single has flopped.
If a no-name, forgotten band with those sorts of stats approached Duran Duran and asked to work with them, do you think Duran would be champing at the bit to get them into the studio?
While Lindsay mightn't be the worst singer in the world, she is an actress first and foremost who tried to branch out rather than being a real musician. Not to mention these days she is just a (former) celebrity who is more in the news for negative reasons rather than really achieving anything of note.
So I totally understand people being skeptical and apprehensive about the collaboration. There is nothing that Lindsay Lohan can really bring to the band musically other than her name. So yet again it looks like Duran Duran are teaming up with certain acts just to get a bit of attention and make some publicity, which once again looks desperate.
Another but...
How do we know what really transpired? Lindsay used to date Mark Ronson's sister. How do we know that Lindsay didn't let slip to Mark that she wants to get back into music and also loves Duran Duran? What if she asked Duran if she could perform with them? Maybe she is using the band to help get a foot back into the musical door rather than the band using her for her celebrity status? It could be win-win for both of them!!!
The funny thing about criticising who the band works with is, we only really know if it was successful or not AFTER the album is released. If Red Carpet Massacre had been as good as AYNIN, and gotten Duran Duran back into the public eye, then that would have left all the naysayers with egg on their faces. Conversely if the DD14 songs that John Frusciante appear on are bad with ordinary guitaring, then all the people who are excited about his involvement are going to be disappointed as well.
Either way I don't really care. I just want Duran Duran to make great music. Regardless of who they choose to work with. I know John Frusciante, Mark Ronson, and of course Nile Rodgers are brilliant. I just hope that Mr Hudson and the Lohan sisters are brilliant as well, and everybody else who contributes to the album. I want Duran Duran to make the real music they are capable of, music that consummate pros at this stage of their career shows how good they are as instrumentalists and songwriters.
Their last album was a great step in the right direction. Hopefully DD14 adds to it and even exceeds it!
