So I bought me a card to convert VHS....
This was broadcast on 22 september 1990 Little interview in between the songs. What struck me is what in incredibble drummer Sterling is. Even if it's playback... Enjoy, haven't seen this on Youtube before.

i would say this is Duran's BEST performance because they really got their sound to sound JUST like the recorded album versions! Bravo!

Agree about Sterling - he was the Tony Thompson (TT) like drummer that worked well with Duran - esp on the live shows - too bad Andy wasnt in the band at the same time - Andy clicked with TT and he would have clicked with Sterling's power as well.
I liked Liberty - but the album missed that "grab you from the throat killer single".

The vocals sound live, but the backing could be from the album. I'm undecided about the drums as they sound good, but this could be playback boost etc.
Thanks for preserving this. I used to have lots of rare Duran on VHS videos - long since gone to the tip.

Thanks for posting that, it's always nice to reminisce and view new Duran material! But let's be honest, the entire performance was as live as Jimmy Hoffa. Call me old fashioned but seeing Duran on stage lip-syncing and air-guitaring is not compelling viewing. I'd rather put on the CD or even a "real" live DVD (which has still been polished in post-production ) But a Duran video is always better than none, even if it is cheating

I held back and you said it, coolbarn! Nice eye candy with Nick and Simon (Sorry, but I am a living, breathing female!) but not impressed with a lip-synced performance.

I used to have lots of rare Duran on VHS videos - long since gone to the tip. The vocals do seem to have a "live" quality about them somehow, but they, as well as every other bit of each song, are absolutely the studio versions. Shame, as you got my hopes up. The only time I remember Duran doing a live vocal over taped instrumental playback is an old '81 TV performance that I can't for the life of me remember the name of, and have somewhere in my computer...but it was a broadcast (UK or European, i'm sure) that featured incomplete versions of GOF & Careless Memories, and possibly Planet Earth (can't remember that for sure either). It was pretty cool...like getting "alternate vocal takes" versions of the final album cuts. As far as a fully live performance augmented by obvious instrumental backing tapes, the only one I'm aware of is the Power Station's SNL performances of Some Like it Hot and Get It On (which bummed me out as it gave more fuel to the incorrect but oft repeated "these guys can't really play" BS).

Didn't know that UB40 couldn't perform that day. That's probaly why Duran did 3 songs. By the way, I also have First Impression & Serious (also lipsync performance) from the Diamond Awards Show that took place in late autumn / early winter 1990 here in Belgium. Duran Duran also performed there on the 1986 edition.
