As long as Jann Wenner is in charge it won't happen. He hates Duran Duran and if he hates an artist they won't get in. I've known several voting members of the HOF and they tell me horrible stories of bands people want in but because he doesn't want them in they dont go, or they get in many years later. There are plenty of acts who should be in but aren't and likewise acts that shouldn't be in but are, so Duran Duran is in good company. There are certain genres he hates, such as metal and progressive rock so you see lots of those bands not in. I'm hoping as more diverse artists get on the board this will be less of a problem but as it stands now I wouldn't be surprised if less talented acts get in before Duran Duran (hint: look at the "artists" who dominated Rolling Stone Magazine in the late 90's). This is a problem with all Hall of Fames. I was a voting member on another one and most of the inductees were friends of the guy who ran that one, and also a HOF and museum,

It's a shame that someone so biased is running the thing. I never knew the committee was run by so many Rolling Stones people. Duran will definitely NEVER get in!
I personally wouldn't care, but the fact that induction helps sales makes me wish they would be inducted. Duran deserves the exposure.

A nice write up from Richard Blade re: yesterday's HOF announcement...
Voting members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame once again this morning demonstrated their incredible lack of taste and passed over inducting The Smiths and Nine Inch Nails. There are 800 voters total - the much hyped fan vote only counts as ONE of those 800 - and it seems that the geriatric committee have an adversion for anything progressive or innovative in the "rock" field. It's inconceivable to me that Depeche Mode, New Order, The Cure and Duran Duran have never even been considered for nomination, never mind inclusion. Just a travesity. I'm all for guitar riffs and drum solos but really? Come on Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It really is time to wake up and listen to the great music and bands you are missing.

I'm on Facebook discussing this and it's true. Whether they want to admit it or not but all of those bands (I'd include Joy Division too though they became New Order)influenced what we know as alternative radio today. The alternative explosion of the 90's never would have happened without those bands and many others. Hard to remember now, but DD wasn't always the top 40 pop band, they started really as a punk band to some extent. Honestly I think all of these acts deserve it more than NWA, who to me may have been influential but caused a lot of problems in society. Now with the acts being inducted the acts outside of NWA have had long careers: Cheap Trick, Chicago, Deep Purple and Steve Miller Band. All of these acts had songs in the 70's and 80's. Deep Purple should have been in years ago as they are pioneers of heavy metal/hard rock like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. Chicago added instruments to rock music that normally aren't in there. Interestingly, both Chicago and Cheap Trick were small bands years ago who played schools near me and are both from Illinois. Not important really, just a side note. I don't have a problem with these acts getting in, I have a problem with certain acts inducted while others aren't. I think I've told my story of knowing members of a group inducted and to them it meant the world. Most have passed away so it was a thing that brightened their day when they were older.

Yeah DD was initially a college radio staple - and as you say a big influence ushering in the new alternative music. But then MTV...and they were all so pretty...and...

That's what hurt them, they became a teen idol band and when that happened they lost a lot of respect.
