Thanks for posting that. Very interesting... it does sound like he has sort of a similar viewpoint to the band's and probably a lot of musicians in general. When you develop a sound that's so distinctly yours and associated with your first few albums, it's hard to drag everyone along with you as you experiment and try to work with other sounds and styles. DD managed to do this successfully in some ways, especially when the songs were good enough anyway (regardless of the sound they were using).
In DD's case, I think a lot of what Billy said could apply to the band's situation when they were recording Astronaut and AYNIN. In the former's case, a lot of longtime fans really wanted them to 'return' to the sound that they had in the early 80's. A lot of people were happy with the album and songs, but some people were disappointed that it didn't invoke a lot of the sound they made 25 years earlier (john's frantic bass lines, etc.). Then take the opposite scenario, where Ronson pushed them in a direction where they purposely tried to record and sound a lot like they did in the earlier era. Again, many fans praised the songs and the album, but there were also some that said they were "trying too hard" to sound like their younger selves. Go figure!
But as Billy said, being an artist is sort of like making your own language and doing new things over time. Maybe a lot of that explains John's comments on the band's thoughts re: AYNIN in more recent times.
