Coolbarn, coolbarn, coolbarn...what is the matter with 'to whom it may concern'?? Without checking the sleeve that's the track that segues into 'sin of the city'...Right? I love that number! Mind you I'm very biased with the whole album as many of you already know!! In fact the one song that doesn't feel at home on TWA is 'Breath after Brearh' I don't dislike it, I just think the album feels a bit awkward. Would have liked 'Falling Angel' there instead, or 'As a matter of fact'. Yes To Whom It May Concern does lead into the brilliance of Sin Of The City, just like the silliness that is Shotgun also leads into the brilliance of Come Undone as well To be honest To Whom It May Concern is not the worst song Duran have made, and it doesn't make my ears bleed. Speed it up a little and you have something resembling The Reflex, although nowhere near as good. But ultimately it remains pedestrian without much hook, especially the chorus which is very average by Duran's lofty standards. But if you love it, that's great! We all have different opinions after all, and many of my Duran likes tend to be in the vast minority. I just think that Falling Angel is such a great song, Matter Of Fact a really pretty ballad, and both Stop Dead and Time For Temptation really catchy, groovy sort of tracks, that it is very unfortunate that they couldn't find a place on the album over some of the obviously weaker stuff. I mean Shotgun doesn't even go for one minute - why even bother chucking it on there except to say "Hey guys, do you like our brief and pointless Prince impression"? And don't get me started on Drowning Man. Give me catchy melodies over quasi-house-techno bollocks any day of the week.

Jack is the illegitimate second cousin to Georgie Davis. (If that bad joke needs explaining then you're most likely a troll. All kidding aside, thank you for the info, Remco7609. I've loved that song (Falling Angel) since I got it as a surprising b-side on cassette back in the summer of '93. At the time I was blasting it on the tape deck of my new 1990 Chevy Cavalier while driving from my beachside flat (borrowing the UK housing term) at Topsail Island, North Carolina to my military base at Camp Lejeune. As has been stated in this thread insomuch already...WHY WASN'T THIS A SINGLE LET ALONE AN ALBUM TRACK?? I've tried (& failed) to come up with a psychological and/or real world reason why the boys (i.e.,Duran Duran) fail to smell the roses when they themselves have planted the rose bush. E.g., Falling Angel, Salt In The Rainbow, Beautiful Colours, Cry Baby Cry, et al, etc., etc. My only working theory is the guys, after hearing their own work/demos/tunes 100+ times, before the album tracks are selected, become jaded & sonically immune (that's a new definition as far as I know so I've coined it... feel free to use it) to what is sitting right in front of their eyes...I mean ears...& aforementioned roses end up being relegated to b-sides... or worse...being left unheard at all until an unscrupulous insider fan obtains the source material (Good evening, Mavie 1...please???) & posts said material online for all us still breathing Duranies to sniff, smell, savor...absorb...listen to. Just a few thoughts on this full moon night (for me a night off sipping a fine, upper shelf bourbon whilst spinning the 1st album...Yeah. There's a thread on this site concerning Nick's keyboard skills... I will digress ...He was about 19 years old when that album was recorded & the dark synth is masterful to say the very, very least ...don't become jaded &/or sonically immune!!). Signed, CrimeAndPassion. Stay Gold. but there are other people who actually decide this stuff....

Regarding the songs left off/songs put on debate, I think there are some points to be made about hearing your own material so many times over a period of time and then becoming a bit detached from it as a result. Coolbarn also brings up an interesting point with Astronaut and The Wedding Album being the primary albums he cites where certain songs were left off too. If I remember correctly, songs like Come Undone and Femme Fatale were added to the album as last minute recordings. They, in turn, probably replaced songs like Falling Angel and Time for Temptation in the process of that. (I want to say that this was addressed in some prior thread from before, but I’m too lazy to look it up right now, haha).
Astronaut, on the other hand, suffered from a very long gestation period and a record company situation where they had no major label to release it through in late 2002 or so. Some songs leaked, some new songs were recorded afterward that the band were probably excited about over ones they'd already heard 1000 times, and so on.
Now, whether the songs taken off should have been left on in exchange for other ones, that’s obviously up for debate. But like Aglewis hinted, I’m sure there’s other people involved in the decisions for the track listings as well (managers, record companies, etc.). Maybe the band members are the ones that make the final decisions anyway, but that doesn’t mean that an opinion or circumstance can’t sway them in some cases either…
