Aren't you aware of the 12 inch version that leaked a few years ago ? That's probably as close to how an official AVTAK DD extended mix 85 release would have sounded like. The only difference is it wasn't released. I just watched the Top of the Pops special on the year 1985. In it was an interview with Paul Hardcastle who kept AVTAK from the n°1 spot in the UK. He did so - delibarately - by releasing multiple mixes of "19" so fans of the song bought multiple copies. In hindsight, the absence of an official 12" for AVTAK just might have been the reason the song stalled at n°2 in the UK... Here's a link to the discussion on this board on that official remix : duranduranboard.proboards.com/thread/33047/view-12-remix Attachment DeletedYep, the blessed leak of the absolutely official but shelved Steve Thompson 12" mix pretty much ends the need for frivolous fan edits, and before anyone says "John said there never was one", he wasn't there when Steve Thompson did the remix! www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10152833541551119&set=p.10152833541551119&type=1&theater

I still wonder why they chose not to release it.
Here's a possibility : The single version was mixed in New York by Jason Corsaro, giving it the The Power Station drum sound.
The 12 inch version was mixed in Paris. This is actually the Arcadia remix of the song in which Nick chose to use his chord.
The two versions were now too different. Maybe John Barry stopped it from being released ? Or the band chose not to release it because the drum sound on the single was so much better ?
The fact that John doesn't remember it may be due to his cocaine use at that time. And he must have been fully focused on the Power Station.

According to JT, he refused to make a 12 inch dance mix..........which he regrets !

Well, I have a hard time believing that. Did JT have that much clout in the band at that time ? No, because he said he refused to make one and there's still one that got made. I do believe JT (and AT) were the ones who oversaw the mixing of the song the most. It was done by The Power Station protagonists and JT was living in NY at that time. Does anyone know if any other DD bandmembers were present when AVTAK was mixed ?
Not to release a 12 inch for a top 5 worldwide hit is refusing to easily cash in on a big amount of money at that time. So I'm pretty sure EMI must have been part of that decision.
I've given this some more thought and I think it has to do with the song being tied to the film.
It just had never happened before that a James Bond theme song got a remix treatment and/or was released on a 12 inch. While Duran had a big tradition in that department, the James Bond themes did not have any.
So it must have been John Barry or the film studio preventing it from happening.
The fact that DD did the theme song was already a big step. Duran Duran was a well established brand on their own and tying two well established brands together is a risk.
I think a 12 inch was just a step too far at that time. Especially with the one that got made. That one contained the chord Barry did not approve of. So he would never have signed off on it.
Things would change with the next Bond movie, The Living Daylights.
The same generatio conflict between Barry and the chosen band (A-ha) occurred but a 12 inch did get released. One that was faithful to the original production, only more established musically, call it "naturally extended".
So I guess we can conclude that an official released 12 inch of A View To A Kill would have had to have sounded just like the single, only longer. I agree that this would have been the best choice. It may still be possible to create such a mix but Jason Corsaro, unfortunately, isn't with us any more. The Power Station studio doesn't exist any more. But maybe the elevator shafts, that were used to create that specific reverb on the drums are still there ? And Nick would have to swallow his pride and use Barry's chord instead of the one he had wanted. Considering that he plays John Barry's chord each time the band plays live I don't think this would be too difficult.

Agree with much of the above DOTR
DD were fractured at the time weren't they, so many factors would have been an issue
I just though I'd quote JT
Thing is that we don't have to believe "everything" DD suggest.............I guess !

Thing is that we don't have to believe "everything" DD suggest.............I guess ! Exactly right! There are times the band can remember what they had for breakfast on November 7, 1983, and other times they can't remember which producer they worked with on a particular song. As I've said before I'm sure there are many regulars here who could give Duran a real run for their money if they took them on in a Duran Duran trivia competition - after all we tend to remember silly little things the band do not
