Over the years that I've been here, I've seen several board members promote their own music on the site, but I've hesitated to do so myself. I'm finally taking the plunge, prompted by the release of a new instrumental, "Nightdrive". soundcloud.com/i_am_kiffa/nightdrive
I've been writing and recording my own songs as a hobby since the late '80s. I'm the furthest thing from a consummate musician or producer; my goal is simply to try to make the most out of the limited skills that I have. I'm more of a songwriter than a performer (having only performed live once, at a recent open mic), and I've written some songs that I'm pretty proud of, even if I sometimes lack the ability to present them in the way that I would like to.
Why should a Duran Duran fan check out my music? Good question. I wish I had a good answer lol. A couple of people have told me over the years that they can hear their influence in some of my songs. I've never set out to try to sound like them, but one thing that we have in common is that I try not to pigeonhole myself into a particular sound. I'll go pretty much wherever a song idea takes me, and if it doesn't sound much like any of my other stuff, all the better.
My Soundcloud gallery is divided into three playlists:
1) The most recent songs, recorded since 2020, which I've been creating with the use of Online Sequencer, a site that I turned to when I found myself unable to connect my keyboards to my computer. I started out only planning to employ OS as a means to make demos, but I've been happy enough with the results to use it on final versions of songs. My aforementioned connection problems have meant that I've had to record the vocals for these songs with my phone, and I plan on re-doing them when possible. soundcloud.com/i_am_kiffa/sets/third-era-2020-present
2) Songs recorded in 2007 and 2008, before I put making music on the back burner for about a decade. These songs were recorded on a TASCAM Portastudio 488 MKII 8-track recorder, and were mostly done for the February Album Writing Month songwriters' challenge. soundcloud.com/i_am_kiffa/sets/second-era-2007-2008
3) Finally, the oldest songs are from between 1988 and 1995, and these are very rough, lo-fi bedroom recordings done in some cases with a Walkman-sized taper recorder, and they sound like it. I know that not everybody will be able to hear beyond the presentation, but if I uploaded it, it's because I think that there's a decent song there underneath all the tape hiss. soundcloud.com/i_am_kiffa/sets/first-era-1988-1995
Thanks to anyone who takes the time to go listen.
