I'm about a third of the way through a non-fiction book, The God Delusion, by Richard Dawkins, the renowned atheist and evolutionary biologist. His extremely dry British humor is a delight, but I'm VERY surprised at the many literary anomalies and inconsistencies in his arguments.
For example, he purports to prove that Thomas Jefferson and Albert Einstein were atheists by selectively quoting them, not from direct sources and in context, but through secondary sources who are making his same points. This is a definite scholarly no-no.
Another example, he expresses scorn for the arugment from authority (e.g., famous people believe in God), but then proceeds to use the same arugment from authority in his case FOR atheism.
Regardless of the flaws (there are many more), he surely is an entertaining read, however. I'd recommend the book highly.

My absolute favorite author is Frank Peretti. He writes Christian fiction. Really great stuff! If you get a chance, take a look at: House The Prophet (Really great!) The Oath Monster The Visitation (Awesome!) They are all really good; these two happen to be my favorites!

I recommend the Elm Creek Novels by Jennifer Chiaverini. There are about 8 books in the series. Some deal with the past. One of the books is called the Runaway Quilt. A woman discovers her ancestors protected slaves crossing into Pennsylvania. They did this by the quilts they hung outside. Other books talk about modern events. I'm not even into quilts. I am waiting for the new book this spring.

I am a fan of non-fiction. I figure I might as well get something out of what I am reading. my last book was Alan Aldas auto-biography. A very enjoyable book.
I need to find a new book as I will be traveling next week. (boring flights)

I never read books b/c I have to read so much for my job but the da vinci code I finished in 2 days. I hate it when you see the movie afterwards... the books always end up being better. I promise its a good read ... the Jane Goodall books are really interesting too if you're into monkey *cough cough* (human) behavior!

Never read The DaVinci Code, even though it seems most everyone else has. Any good? I'm off to the library to see if any of your recommendations are there, so that I have something to do when I don't want to think about Assia Djebar and the writing techniques used by francophone authors in North Africa following their independence from France (the focus of chapter 6 in my dissertation) any more. Really, I love to write and sometimes need an extra boost of inspiration of creativity, how to deal with language as a unit... my dissertation occasionally starts to rub off on my fun writing and makes it sound so dredglingly slow and plodding. (I like to overexplain on my dissertation, so as to increase the page #s.) Will let you know how it goes!

Plain Truth is a great book.. it's about an Amish girl who has a baby without exposing that she was ever pregnant to her family.. unfortunately the baby dies just after birth (in a barn). It is also a bit of a love/soul searching story for a family friend who represents her. I saw the movie based on that, it was actually pretty good. Speaking of Amish lit, have you read any Beverly Lewis? A bit preachy, but other than that it's very interesting. The Postcard is my personal favorite.
