Her: Guess what? Tomorrow is my one year anniversary of having DD as my favorite band! Isn't that awesome? I bought Planet Earth on iTunes on May 15 2007, and that's when I got hooked!
Me: Aww, happy anniversary! Hey, if Duran Duran tours as long as the Rolling Stones have, maybe you too can see them in concert in 25 years!
Her: Are the Rolling Stones still alive? The drugs haven't got them yet? Wow, impressive. I don't want to see them in 25 years. I want to see them before they get all wrinkly and gross.
Me: Too late. They're getting wrinkly already.
Her: Maybe. But at least Simon is aging gracefully, unlike Mick Jagger who is just ... aging.
;D

Props and love to all the young fans, carrying on our legacy. (Disclaimer: I refuse to refer to myself as an "old" fan!)

Haha I'm a young fan too (I'm 18 tomorrow...) nearing my third "fanniversary"(oh god that's awful). I bought Greatest in June 2005 (at the time I bought it the only face I could put a name to was Simon, I thought the Taylors were all related, and I was surprised to learn that Come Undone was their song) and it all went downhill from there, lol my initial interest in them came about in a few strange places actually -i'd been hearing their music on the radio my entire life but didn't give much thought to them, and then they were sort of in my consciousness more prominently because The Reflex was on a video game I'd gotten for christmas; also I'd just recently started watching MuchMusic - my interest in music came a lot later than most of my peers - and What Happens Tomorrow was in fairly heavy rotation; oddly enough the thing that really endeared them to me was that horribly cheesy Arena vid. It's just so bad it's good. ;D I can easily recall the feeling of settling down in my room late at night with my game boy advance and my cd player and hearing "please please tell me now...*buh-dum* please please tell me now... *buh-dum*..." for the first time....haha that was a good summer

I've been a fan since 2005 and "Planet Earth" is the song that hooked me. My first thought when I heard that song was "this song has been around all this time? And I did'nt know!"

All due respect to Simon, but Mick Jagger is 15 years older and has aged a hundred times more gracefully. Jagger's still in primo shape, still has the chops to belt out the tunes and still manages to remember (or at least know where to find on the teleprompter) the words to his own songs.
I think Simon's the bee's knees, but even on a Duran Duran message board I'm gonna have to go with the crafty veteran.

That sounds like me!! It was fall 2004 when I discovered them. My mom had been a huge fan in the 80's, but had lost interest after the Notorious era. She bought Astro, Greatest, and Arena and played them on the way to my baseball games. I can still remember hearing Nice and Sunrise and getting chill bumps! I found myself wanting more, so I encouraged mom to show me her memorabilia and let me listen to their other music. By Summer 05 I was hooked! Then on July 13th, 2005 (The night that changed my life forever) We got to see them live in New Orleans. I remember getting those chills again and being amazed by John's playing, and I thought to myself "This is what I want to do with my life" I will forever be greatful to Duran Duran for being apart of this amazing journey! They are the single biggest influence in my music and my life! ;D

I love reading these stories. They take me wayyyy back to 1982, I was 12 years old. I was flicking through TV channels and caught the end of the "Save a Prayer" video. I came in just before the part where Nick and John are on the elephant's back and it's squirting them. I watched till the end. That little bit of time was all I needed. I thought it was the most beautiful song I'd ever heard. I'd never heard or seen anything like Duran Duran before or since. Sorry to ramble on... Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane.

I remember getting those chills again and being amazed by John's playing, and I thought to myself "This is what I want to do with my life" Me too...After pondering it on and off for the last couple of years I've actually decided to finally start learning the bass. I recently got a job again and a bass guitar is the first thing I'm saving up for Simon may be my favourite bandmember but John is just an amazing bassist and a real inspiration to me.

Awesome! The first song I ever learned on bass was Save A Prayer. I couldn't believe my ears when I was playing it! Nightboat's verse riff is the very first thing I ever learned. Just be patient with it! It took me like 3 months to sound like I was playing anything resembling music! My first bass (a washburn xs-6) was a hand me down from my grandpa. Now I play the Peavy Liberator! Its like heaven... I would suggest to start out with a good quality bass like a Fender or a Peavy. There are some pretty affordable Peavys, like the Millennium. I got a 5-string millenuim for $225 I think. 4-strings run like $200. Don't buy one under 200 and always try them out before you buy it if possible. I wasted 170 on an OLP that sucks! Its not even playable, it doesn't fret from the 10th fret and higher...
