Does the new guitarist even know all the songs? Don't know how many songs he knows for sure, but he's capable of learning them as they come along. I remember when he came on during the Astronaut tour, and he was able to pick up Union of the Snake and I Don't Want Your Love pretty quickly (which were then added back to the playlist as a result). It's not so much a matter of knowing the songs as it is listening to them and learning the chords/scales and coming up with something that's decent sounding to the original, and Dom's been able to do that in the past. As for the set list, I'm still in belief that it's kinda a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation for the band. If they play more obscure/lesser-known songs, the hard-core fans will rejoice while the casual fans will sit back dumbfounded and become even more awkward during the shows. Yet if they play the same hits, the casual fans cheer while the hard-core fans complain afterwards about how they never change it up (not everyone though, mind you). Sure, they can be like Springsteen or something and play mostly different stuff every night... but the band is in a tight situation of trying to please all the casual fans seeing them while trying to give their bigger fans a good time as well. And with their busy lifestyles, it's not that easy to come up with new stuff every night to play for everyone.

The setlist dilemma of pleasing casual and hardcore fans has gone on for years. Their present situation has little to do with it. I think DD can take a bit of a gamble and see what plays out.
Personally, when I attend a concert of a band I just started to casually like, and hear an unknown song, I become excited, and will seek out that song when I get home. That's how casual fans can turn into hardcore fans. So if one is "casual" enough to attend a show, I don't think hearing a several obsecure tracks would ruin their evening, IMO.

Trevor --
I agree. Changing the setlist to more obscure songs would please the hard core fans, but alienate the casual fans. No wonder do this day they say they still fight about the setlist. With a catalog as big as theirs I'd imagine it's pretty difficult.
One cool thing they did in during the summer leg of the Astronaut Tour in 2005 is they seemed to alternate Hungry Like The Wolf, Sound of Thunder and Make Me Smile from show to show. I think maybe doing something like that again might please more fans.

I'll just say that if anyone is bored enough with the setlist to decide to not go to a show... I'LL GO FOR YOU! ;D
(I can't go to any of the shows this time around, money and schedules are too tight. But heck, I'd take free tickets to a "boring" Duran show ANY DAY!)

THX 4 the replies. I'm not bored with the setlist; it just that in 2005 the setlist was slightly different in each city. I don't see setlists BEFORE any concerts I attend; I want to be surprised! So, I was GLAD to HEAR the electro set since I didn't attend the CT/NYC shows in 2007. Also, with non-DD concerts I attend, I know that the setlist is pretty much the same for the whole tour. But, I thought with DD the setlist was be slightly different. So, that's why I was a little taken a back when I noticed the setlist was the same at the 4 shows I saw. Yes, I'm GLAD DD plays for TWO HOURS. Maybe, they might change the setlist for their European Tour.

I think you are missing the point Droid. The fans posting on this board are the ones going to the shows. I guess the die hards (who keep this band afloat) go to multiple shows and would like some variety. I'm aware of fans going to 3, 5, 10 shows and if they all only went to one show well ticket sales would be far less than they currently are (an dthey are down significantly on the reunion tour as are album sales). So fans are going to the 'boring' shows and enjoying them no doubt. I like to think if the Rolling Stones can change up their set every night, challenge their audience and play obscure blues numbers then Duran Duran (with near 30 years touring under their belts) could play one or two different numbers every night. Someone pointed out to me the other day that they have played Come Undone every tour (and almost every show) since 1993. Maybe it could take a break for one tour and be replaced with The Chauffeur. But as someone quite rightly pointed out you can please some of the people some of the time but you can't please all of the people all of the time....

Come on DD! You've got hits people haven't heard in years! "Seventh Stranger"! "New Moon on Monday"! "Last Chance on the Stairway"! Heck, even some Arcadia songs, or more Power Station? Maybe "Is There Something I Should Know"? You do know that 'Last Chance...' is featured in the electroset, right? Personally, when I attend a concert of a band I just started to casually like, and hear an unknown song, I become excited, and will seek out that song when I get home. That's how casual fans can turn into hardcore fans. So if one is "casual" enough to attend a show, I don't think hearing a several obsecure tracks would ruin their evening, IMO. Spot fuc king on. They're not going to expand interest in their back catalogue if they don't play deep cuts; people can download 'HLTW' from iTunes only so many times, you know? I have the same concern with Paul McCartney's setlists; if you think Duran is too rigid w.r.t. song selection from night to night, check out his.

Didn't they leave out both HLTW and Rio during the first few Broadway shows, and most of the critics (and several of the celebrity attendees) complain? So they took out "I Take the Dice" and put Rio back in for those shows.
It seems it's really hard for them to balance what the causual fans & critics expect, and what we die-hard fans want.
That said...I agree with this thread. I loved the concert, because I don't get to see them often, but I would have ADORED hearing a few more non-hit older tunes.

i don't think DD is trying to please hardcore fans , hardcore fans are the ones who always go to the concerts , have at least a few bootlegs , know every step of the band , the hard core fans , know the big thing medazzaland , liberty , thank you or pop trash songs , the rest of fans are superficial , i said that beacause i was one of them , just superficially knew the band work just superficially knew the band history , never heard one bootleg i ever didn't knew what was that , i was DD fan just in base to 7and the R T , Arena , Notorious , or promotions songs like do you belive in shame , burning the ground or electric barbarella , songs that i knew was there outside beacuse i saw the video promotion on the tv , and i can go on and on later whit the internet , finally in the 2005 2006 i can really really heard the albums that i never heard before (thanks to the lack of promotion of course) and finally the last year i became ( in my opinion) a hardcore fan they are just playing safe with the casual and superficials fans , just that.

They are not going to drop all the classics, there are too many people who attend these shows who WANT these songs and that will always be the case (just read the reviews from this tour as a reminder). I can't remember the last show I attended where the classics didn't get the largest applause and screams - people go nuts when they're played. Yes, hardcore fans do attend these shows, but from my experience, there are more casual fans in the bunch. I remember Jones Beach of 05 - they dropped HLTW and I could hear the beeaatching as people were leaving (along with the reviews that followed), people were literally chanting during the show "Rio! Wolf!", I've seen that a lot. They also threw in Come up and See me and New Religion and so many just stood there like statues. Ditto on one of the CT shows I recently attended where they did 'I Take the Dice' and 'Do you believe in shame' (let's not forget they did add those, granted for a short time) - the people around me looked confused and barely swayed. Sure, I would love more obscure tracks, complaining about setlists is very common amongst core fanbases. But I can understand where the band is coming from as well and how they see it, particularly from their perspective on stage (classics = most people go nuts, obscure = not even close to the same).
Having said that, I am pleased with 2 hours on stage, an electro set which is very new for them and hearing some of the RCM tracks. I don't expect them to change it up every night, given the blogs they seem low on free time and keeping up with family seems to fill their voids. It's impossible to please everyone - I remember when they added 'I Take the Dice' and some core fans were beeaatching "why did they do THAT SONG!? they should have done A B C D".....
