Just thought I'd start one for general discussion, for those who are watching!
The opening ceremonies start in five minutes, the CBC is broadcasting them live here in the Detroit area!

The CBC announcer just called it 'Grayjing' because of all the smog! Not exactly the Green Games they were hoping for...

I'm looking forward to this, I love the games, stories, ceremony, even the controversies. Never a dull moment. There's been alot of criticism towards the Chinese government, and justifiably so, but let's also not forget that China is also still reeling from the horrible tragedy from the recent earthquake. Success in these games will be a huge step towards helping a nation heal. I'll be rooting for the US of course, but I'll be cheering for the Chinese too, when they're not going up against one of ours, of course. Besides, I always love to see the home team win, in most cases anyway.

Heh...they just showed Bush and Putin talking to each other and the commentator thought maybe they were discussing the opening drum number.
HA!! No, more likely Bush was asking Putin what the hell he was doing invading Georgia! But, as a foreign expert on Canadian radio said today, Russia picked the perfect time to invade - the rest of the world is distracted with the Olympics, the economy, etc., plus many government officials are on vacation. In his words, "It's the perfect time to invade because, who cares?"

Well, so far it looks REALLY smoggy in China!! You can thank the fireworks for that.
I am a sucker for the Olympics.
Still waiting for the US to trot on the field!

The NBC commentators cracked me up with their stifled commentary about Hungary's outfits.

I thought the opening ceremonies were beautidul. China has a terrific culture regardless of the politics.
This is bothering me. Every country had women except Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia doesn't allow it. Moderate Arab countries (Jordan, Turkey, etc) had women. Does it bother anyone else that a country that discriminates against women is allowed to participate? Everyone talks about China being a terrible country on human rights (and it is) but at least they allow women to be athletes. I realize it's not fair to ban the (male) athletes of Saudi Arabia but this seems so hypocritical.
Outside of that, I enjoy looking at the countries come in. Many I rarely hear of. A few have changed their names in the last few years.
