just read this post. excuse me, but why can't someone feel bitter? Warren literally SAVED this band in the 90s... only to be secretly thrown out eventually by a letter! Also, everything he is saying IS TRUE. Andy CAN'T play his parts. Warren is sad about what happened to the group. They lost all integrity in attempts to sell records (which they still don't). What is wrong with being negative and bitter if your POINTS ARE VALID?? Society is so quick to judge negativity just so they can feel outraged by something. Warren SHOULD be angry. He is a virtuoso, no one can play his parts! He was kicked out - and for what? so Andy can return in a year and cause more trouble? Not everything that is negative is wrong dear. Don't let society dictate what the proper way to speak is. I'll always agree with Warren and his stance. I too feel like he's completely justified in his bitterness. You totally should wait five years to give your review on Paper Gods. Lol

Well, in the end it was only two songs with Warren´s virtuoso guitars that Andy had to learn, Ordinary World and Come Undone... Oh, and they performed Electric Barbarella once or twice I think (Andy's guitar is most likely on Skin Trade, so he knew that one already). So that was WC´s major contribution as opposed to the majority of the post-reunion set list that were 85% pre-1987 songs and 10% new material. Leaving 5% for the fabulous Warren-led years (two songs from one album). What about John Taylor's contribution for DD in the '90? As Nick said, "Wedding Album" was written basically by Nick-Simon-Warren. Moreover, half of lyrics on "Medazzalad" and "Pop Trash" was written by Nick & Warren.

Painfully evident.

Look Warren nailed it here, the only decent album since the reunion was AYNIN. Paper Gods is the crap Warren is talking about in this quote.
"I heard some of the stuff. Obviously, I wasn't impressed. It was very disappointing. I was hoping for a lot on the first one but it was so bad. And the second one was even worse. Look, when you're looking for the essence of yourself in other people, outside producers - and I'm talking handfuls of them - handfuls of them for truckloads of cash. It just really doesn't work. It might work for a young Madonna or a middle-aged David Bowie looking for another image change, you know? I think it's best to do things - and I told this to Nick Rhodes too - handmade, man. Handmade is the way to go. Do it yourself."

i agree with Warren that the recording process needs to be more organic, but i also think the band are right when they say (and they've said this over and over again), that they need a producer. Medazzaland needed a producer outside of TV Mania - it is painfully obvious to me that this is true. i know some folks really like that album, and more power to you. but Medazzaland is just a mess in my opinion and i don't fault John and EMI for having had enough.
that said, i've always found Warren's attitude a bit frosty. 'my guitar playing is so awesome, man!'. really dude? arguably the worst Duran Duran records (aside from RCM) ALL happened on your watch. by the time the 90s were coming to a close, Warren's leadership of DD had left them forced out of two record deals, down the last Taylor, and with no real prospects to move forward as they were. but, hey 'his guitar playing is so awesome, man!'. give me a break.
i wish Warren well - i would love to see Missing Persons rise from the ashes one day. that doesn't sound likely, but i think he's best suited for that gig.

Holy thread necro Batman! You're dedicated, but four and a half years behind everyone else. I look forward to reading your review of Paper Gods in 2020 That'll work because DD will be putting out their next album by then!

I admit that I never listened to any of JT's music with the exception of IDWID, I cannot fault him for anything. The man was heavily addicted to drugs and in the end, left DD to get clean. I have nothing but respect for him for that. I am sincerely happy that his leaving affected the members the way it did because that shows the love they had for each other about something that they created from scratch. In the end, it all worked out. John is back in DD and still making great music!

I feel the same. The Britishness of Duran is what I like about the band, and WC's American rock attitude is at odds with that. I really like TWA, but imo that --plus Electric Barbarella-- is the only memorable thing that WC contributed in his 13-year tenure with the band that stands out. Liberty, PT and Medazzaland are very poor albums and even Big Thing is not great (the few 'pop' songs are nice, but I hate the WC guitar crap --Lake Shore Driving etc-- on that album, have not played these songs sinds 1989). In the end, DD were just synonymous with TV Mania, JT left (he was never a great match with Warren if you read between the lines looking back at many interviews) and SlB was very very unhappy with his dominance. So it's good the reunion happened. Many may disagree, but AT really contributed something unique to the band's catalogue; in addition to him playing on the first 3 albums, The Wild Boys, AVTAK and at least one third of Notorious, I really like his guitars on Astronaut. Missing Persons is a band nobody has heard of outside the USA. Even less known than a-ha in the US

That's a strange logic right there.
