...should anyone feel guilty if they DON'T download it from iTunes?
I'm in a caribbean island...no iTunes here.

And does it being free mean that people can keep downloading it over and over again to ensure that it really does get to number one?

i've heard that itunes tracks purchases from individuals to ensure they don't get too many copies. i think 4 is the limit for one song...so even if it's free, only a set number of purchases goes to the chart numbers.
to get the track free, i am sure you have to have or sign up for an itunes account. so they can certainly keep track of how many times you get/buy it.

Yes, you do have to create an iTunes account. I'd planned on downloading just the single and buying the CD next year, I'm not in the mood to create an account for just one song.

The other problem is that you need the correct version of itunes. I was asked to download the upgrade, my computer is old and I broke it last time upgrading to 9.0. Its not worth the effort to risk breaking the computer for a free single that could wind up costing more to repair a computer. I guess I'll wait until february.

Well, I downloaded it once even though I had it already. I figured it would be good for the ratings on I-Tunes. I will tell people it is free though, so maybe my friends and family will download it as well.
