SCHOOL pupils took part in a moving carol service in support of a charity that helps teenage cancer victims. The youngsters performed in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust at Newcastle’s St Nick Cathedral yesterday. Proud parents and ex-Duran Duran star Andy Taylor, originally from Cullercoats, looked on as children from Cragside Primary School, in High Heaton, sang traditional carols. They were joined by the 150-strong Inspiration Choir – one of the largest community choirs in the country. Taking to the stage for a solo performance was 20-year-old Melissa Cavanagh, a former patient of the TCT unit at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle. Melissa, from Newcastle, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma when she was 13. She said: “When I was first diagnosed, I was put on to a children’s ward. Then I was lucky enough to be transferred to TCT’s unit at the RVI. “I was with other teenagers going through cancer just like me, and I was amazed at the facilities. “I’m now in remission and pursuing my passion for music. I’m so happy and proud that I can help raise money for TCT to help other teens.” Gary Griffiths, founder of the choir, said: “We love to take our singing out to the community – it’s such a joyous feeling and we can raise vital funds for TCT.” For more information see www.teenagecancertrust.org Read More www.chroniclelive.co.uk/north-east-news/evening-chronicle-news/2010/12/17/choir-raises-money-for-teenage-cancer-trust-72703-27843914/#ixzz18NzOaHMQ

Nice of Andy to be there! Thanks for posting this.
Now I have a question - doesn't nationalised health care cover cancer?

yes it covers medical costs, but because cancer is treated in very specific hospitals, all travelling costs and lodging can become very expensive for the family, and that's what these fund-raisers are for, to keep family homes near the hospital and help with that. i thinks that's it at least.
