That's a good question. I would think it's hard to say how many acetate CD-Rs are made for an artist and to whom they go out to. I've also seen the CD-R for Electric Barbarella for sale years ago, but passed up on it because I already have the songs that are on there.
It's getting to the point now with some of the more recent releases where you have to raise an eyebrown when the seller says it's an acetate.

all i can tell you for certain is it will depend on the market and the population of the market.
so the usa is going to have the highest numbers made and a place like australia or canada is going to have far less made. <usa population = 300 million people. aus and canada have about 30 million each.>
and to me, an acetate is a piece of vinyl and has nothing to do with cds!

If the U.S. is such a large country, then why are some promos so scarce / hard to find? I mean, whether you want to call the CD an 'acetate' or a 'promo', wouldn't it seem logical to be able to get these easier than it would be if you were in the UK? Take for example this CD: CDR: 2004 US (Epic; no catalog number) [studio promo; yellow Epic card sleeve] ?:?? Watermark Language ?:?? Sunrise - Final Master ?:?? What Happens Tomorrow (Patterson With Strings) Only seen once in Ebay, but look at how many 'acetate' / 'promo' CDs you see on Ebay for certain items but yet this has never popped up again. When I've been to London and gone to the second hand record stores, finding 'acetate' CDs was not too hard.

That sounds like an in-house promo just made for internal use by the label, band and production staff, so there would generally be less than 5 copies made. Other promos sent to radio stations and promotional contacts would have hundreds of copies made. The widely available promos would have proper mix names or radio edit designation (never the internal or technical names like "final master" or "Patterson with strings")
