What do all of you do to keep a catalog of your stuff? Is there a programme you think works best to list everything and make it possible to search for something? I know very little about computers and would need something basic to make a list and I also have no money to buy a programme, so I would love to know what basic stuff works. Whatever might be on my computer already, in other words. I am in the middle of a HUGE cleanout of my entire apartment and I figure while I am @ it, I might see if I can do a new inventory. But my last inventory was done when Liberty was out and it is all hand written on notebook paper. If I DO try to take this on, I want to get pictures of everything and make notes about condition and item numbers and country of origin and such. I want to do it right. And maybe one of these days I will post a list somewhere. Don't hold your breath, though. I am notorious (no pun intended) for starting things and not finishing or never getting around to stuff @ all. But if I am going to do it, I need to figure out what I am doing.

i use a simple microsoft excel spreadsheet. (but you can get open office or use google docs and do the exact same thing for free)
each type of item has it's own sheet.
so 7 inch, 12 inch, ep, album, cd, tape, vhs/beta/ld, sheet music, fan club and so on.
each sheet has a top line of all the fields...
so for 7 inches it's like this:
# name year catalog # country notes image name quantity
so for planet earth it would be #1, careless memories #2, etc. but in order of release
and when you take the photo, you can rename it or just keep the name/number the camera gives it but all you need to do is paste the name into the field
here's my one for planet earth uk
# name year catalog # country notes image name quantity 1 PLANET EARTH 1981 EMI 5137 UK STOCK PS PE-UK 2
nique, if you have excel i could just send you a copy of my sheet with just the headings so all you need to do is plug the info in. it would save you a lot of time!
derek...

and one other thing...
if you are pressed for time, i would focus on getting a list made of the name, country and details. everything else can be added later. catalog numbers can always be found on the web.

I have made WORD-documents in different categories, so 7"/12"/CD/CDS/LP/DVD etc. I've also done this for the solo releases. The items on the list are in order of year of release. So the 7"s start with Planet Earth, then Careless Memories etc etc. Not too different from the way Derek writes it down, I just choose WORD instead of Excel.
I write down the country of release, catalogue number, if it's a promo release and the year of issue. I also write down things about the release (so "postersleeve" for example).
So my 7"s start like this: 1. Planet Earth (UK EMI 5137) 1981 2. Planet Earth (JAP EMS-17134) 1981 ....... 9. Anyone Out There (BRA 31C 006 64832 promo) 1981
I also recently photographed most of my collection. Some day I hope to make my own little DD collection site...some day...

you can use the output of word to write to excel and to html. so it's possible to link your docs into a spreadsheet and then use that to make an html file that goes on the web!! it can even link the images. so once you set it up correctly, it is easy to update and takes way less time that doing all the tasks by hand.
once you have a huge collection, you can see that taking the time to get it sorted out can eat up ton of time and energy. just getting mine to a manageable place has taken literally years and years.

i also use excell to track everything i have.. for other artists i have bought music collector program which is great. u get a scanner or simply insert a cd into comp to scan a bar code, then program dowloads alo info plus pictures from its own data base or amazon etc....its great stuff.. but for duran excell as i enter serial numer, country, year and most important info about the item..autographed,sealed opened etc... lists are divided into sheets for singles, videos, albums, side projects etc....

I too use Excel. I make categories such as song, artist, time, album (whether it came from an actual CD or one I made), along with notes, such as is it live, remixes, etc. The Excel sheet was so long I split it into two. I then made a Word document listing every legitimate CD I had. I also made a separate list for every VHS and DVD I own.

Nice question!
I work the other way around...
I have an Excel file in which the discography is spreaded, incl. details and pictures. All items i have are indicated with a green colour, all that is on the way is orange. Got sheets for DD, Arcadia and bootlegs. And if i see items online which are not in the list, i simply add them.
See pic.
Best regards, Peter

Nice Poptrash. Mine kind of looks like that except I don't do colors or photos. I do have a separate list where I list everything I plan to eventually buy.
