My son's mouth is really small and he had permanent teeth growing in on top of other permanent teeth which would have resulted in early loss of some of his permanent teeth. NOT A GOOD THING! I took him to the dentist a few years ago & he basically said that my son either had to have oral surgery or braces now. Oral surgery didn't sound very fun so I went ahead & did the braces. My son got braces a year ago. He's nine now & the braces are coming off next month. He'll keep a retainer until he's about 14 and then we'll go back to braces. It's been worth it to prevent my son from having hillbilly teeth. Next month he wants a big bag of Doritos the day his braces come off! ;D

When it's permanent teeth on top of permanent teeth then I can agree more with the braces. But putting braces over baby teeth seems extreme to me but what do I know? I am NOT a dentist.

Dentistry in the States is a huge money making racket. My husband is a dentist in Israel. It's quite different here although standards and prices are similar. I highly doubt the dentist can predict such things from an xray. Get a second opinion before putting a small child (pediatric dentristy is an expensive specialty) through the torture and yourself through the expense.

I will let you all know what the dentist recommends when I take him in. I hope I can get him in before the end of the month. Our current insurance plan covers pediatric dentistry, the one we are switching to doesn't. Figures.

I just spoke with his dentists office. They said it is perfectly okay and the he doesn't even need to come into the office. As long as it's on the bottom teeth, there is no problem. The teeth will grow in and push the baby teeth out. Even though it looks as though they are growing in in the wrong place, they really aren't. If it happens on the top, however, that is cause for concern.

My oldest son had two sets of front teeth. They actually had to pull the set in front so that the back set would move forward. They also had to break and reset his jaw before doing braces so that his jaw would be in the proper place.
My two younger kids are going to be getting dental work. I'm just damn glad that my old pediatric dentist is still practicing. My daughter has been difficult to get her in the chair so the work could be done. She likes this dentist though so I am hoping it isn't too big a problem.

My jaw is too small for the number of teeth a person has. So when I was 8, the dentist (my uncle's best friend) pulled all of my first bicuspids. I got braces, wore them until I was 11 and then wore a retainer until 14. Today as an adult, my teeth are still crowded, but none are loose and I had no problems with my wisdom teeth.
My husband thinks it's weird that they pulled my bicuspids, but if not, I'd be in bad shape dentally now.

An update - The adult teeth are coming in and the baby teeth in front are loose. One of them is very loose and should come out today. Once that happens, the adult one in back should start to move into place. The tooth fairy is a-comin'!

My oldest; her baby teeth would not come out and her adult teeth would grow in behind them so she would have to get the baby teeth pulled, ofcourse she had to get braces. I just remember her crying every time we had to take her to the dentist because pulling her teeth hurt her so much
