so i was laid off last week and though i have already applied for another job and am looking into others, i am not wasting time applying for unemployment. i'm wondering how long it usually takes to get the claim processed and then how long until the first check?
my reason for asking? here's the message on the state UI website:Due to peak-season workload and recent closures resulting from the Denver-metro-area snowstorms and state holidays, it is currently taking Unemployment Insurance (UI) Operations 6 weeks to process UI claims. We appreciate your patience and understanding. so am i correct in assuming it will be probably two months before i get a check?
~edit~ i thought maybe the title was confusing, so i changed it ... sorry! looks like i may have finally commited the ultimate threadkill ... killing my own thread in the initial post ... hahaha!!

I had to file once a few years ago when I got laid off and could barely pay the rent. I don't think it took more than a week to get the first check - but that was in Michigan. I'm not sure it would be the same where you are.... doesn't each state do it differently? I'm not sure. Michigan's procedure was that once you filed, you had to call into some voice mail system every two weeks on a certain day at a certain time (mine was between 8-9 am) to renew it for another 2 weeks - it was bizzare. I got ulcers being afraid I'd forget to call at the right time. I'm glad I wasn't stuck on it for very long!
Good luck on the job search!

Good luck on the job search! yes, there are instructions on calling in every two weeks and you have to keep a log of the job contacts you make, etc etc ... i'm just scared of how to get by without a paycheck for two months now!

A recent unemployee..My last day was on the 23rd and I filed on the 26th. I went online and did all what was needed, infoetc. Then a few days later I got a packet with more info. They make you wait before you go back and start your weekly claim. I got my first payment last Sat. So about 2-3 weeks. You get this nifty debit card to.
I live in NYC, so it might be different.

A few years ago when I lost my job I had to apply for it. It only took a couple weeks for me to get my first check.

I'm in Pennsylvania. When I was laid off a few years ago, I seem to remember it took 3-4 weeks to get my first check.

My husband lost his job in NY - it took two weeks from the day he was laid off.
When we moved to FL, I was able to apply for UI since I had to give up my job for a forced move. It took about a month, but the delay was because we had to prove we couldn't stay in NY. By the time I received my first check, I was already working.
Good luck. I don't remember ever feeling more vulnerable than that 6 month period.
